Website/Host(?) "Development" Question?

Well, this may be the wrong place for this post, however I tried it in the "Programming" Forum for about a week, to no avail (no replies), so I'll just run it up the old flag-pole here ...)

I have several domain names (I supposedly "own" them ... though I think "lease" or "rent" is actually more accurate?) . I have had them one of them for almost two years, and am getting close (I "think") to attempting to use it for what I got it for.

I am looking to try to "develop" at least one of these names as a website, but the "Host" (if that is the correct terminology), named "Hostmonster" has proven (for me) impossible to work with (though in fairness, I have only "attempted" SEVERAL times to get ANYTHING to "go onto" my "site" ... "anything"!).

I had read somewhere that Hostmonster was 'ok' as a Host (or server - or whatever?), but that they were hard for NON-Techie-type of people to, "work with". That has been my experience. And the one time that I called their tech-support (although that would be MY tech-support now - wouldn't it??), I got a "guy", who, while nice enough, and seemingly patient, proved to be no help in getting me up & running there. The "answers" I got were such as: "I don't know why it does that, but ..." and, "I'm not really sure why it does that, however" ...

So, my question(s) is (are): WHAT IN THE NAME OF JAMES BROWN AM I DOIN' HERE (that is, me trying to "develop" - if that's the correct term - a website)???

Has anyone heard of this Hostmonster? Has anyone dealt with them? I am not a 'techie" (not by any stretch of the imagination) - I would simply like to have a website that works (rather than seeing the same "Under Construction" message that I've seen for two years).
