Am I in the right place?

Please can somebody help me - I've been struggling for 12 hours to get two gifs to upload to my website, and nothing I do will get them to appear.

    My website address is www.susiekellywritingservices.com.

I'm an absolute novice at FTP and have totally messed up my site half a dozen times this morning. Now it seems to be OK, except the pictures aren't there.

Thanks to anybody who can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

    Susie :(

Susie: I looked at your site, and the picture is trying to open right there on the main page. What we do for my web site is make a folder holding the picture, and have it look for it there. Ok to explain, yours is looking for the picture at : http://www.susiekellywritingservices.com and for some reason is not finding it. Try making a fold maybe like this: http://www.susiekellywritingservices.com/picture and make sure the URL looks for that picture in whatever you name that folder, and make sure you have the picture placed there. For the 2nd picture I would do a folder for e-mail. and name it like this : http://www.susiekellywritingservices.com/email. You may try looking at my web site to see how mine is marked if you want: www.curtismichigan.com Are you using Front Page or what to do your website? I think your site is just confused because it doesn't know what file to look for the pictues in. Maybe someone more advanced than me has a better idea, but from what I see this is what's needed. Hope it works for you.

That's a good point, I also noticed that you have your pictures located in a folder called index_files. How are you uploading to your space, is it using software such as SmartFTP to your IP's provided webspace or did you purchase space with your domain?
On another site I have just started on for a friend, I've put the images in the main folder, say for example, it's a music site so it's my webspace then everything in a folder called "MusicSite". I have all the pages in the folder and then the page folders with data in there. But on the homepage I have put the images just in the "MusicSite" folder, and not using an index_files folder like you. Try it.

Did you add the location of the uploaded pics to the HTML code?

small sample of something I'm working on with the picture on the page code highlighted in bold.

Thank you all very much for your help. I think it's sorted out now, by creating a new directory (I didn't even know how to do that and had to get help!), and sliding the pictures into it. As far as I can see from my browser, it's working, although maybe I'm looking at the cache!

    Lovely place you have, Yooperlady.

I made my site with Word and converted it into a web page, I was absolutely thrilled to find out how easy it was, until it all began having a hissy fit. I'm using Coffee Cup for uploading.

Why don't the servers call the folders things like: "Pictures in here", etc., so you know where everything goes?

    Again, everybody, thanks.

For Word that's not bad at all, glad you've got it sorted though!

I think in the future you should try Frontpage or Dreamweaver, everything's organised for you and it's so much easier.

I tried both programs in the past. Couldn't understand the first thing about Dreamweaver, and got in a tremendous muddle with Frontpage. Once I'd finally got the webpages finished, the upload was quite easy, but the end result was all over the place, and somebody told me Frontpage is a "dirty coder" and advised me not to use it.

All things are easy to those who know how!

    Thanks for the advice.

just noticed that the picture below your email link is still missing? you will need to link to its location for it to show as you did with the top pic.

I think it's showing in Firefox, but not IE. The nice people at the hosts tell me they've changed the HTML code in my index file to resolve this problem, and suggested that I downloaded the file and changed the code for the second image myself.

I haven't the slightest idea how to do that (change the code, I mean, or find where they changed it). I read through 50 pages of mystery without being any the wiser.

So for the time being there isn't much I can do about it, except hope they'll be kind enough to do the second one, too.

Thanks for letting me know, anyway
