Website tracking of teenager

I am trying to see what websites my 14-yr old has accessed. Yes he is going to "those" sites, we know he is, we have talked to him about it, revoked his PC privileges, changed all the passwords so he has to “ask” in order to get on, etc.

Short of someone standing over him while he is doing his homework or other computer required tasks, is there anyway that we can see what sites he has been to? I have heard that there is a way to do this and I have looked through the cookies (before he has had to chance to do anything about them) and could not see the addresses of one of “those” sites I had just seen him on before he quickly closed the IE window.

I did scan through some +200 posts that appeared to be of similar nature, but of those that were relevant, the steps were pre-WIN-XP and I couldn’t seem to find the new folders that were being referenced.

All user id’s that are actively used do not have administrator privileges.

I am looking into a ‘Net-Nanny’ type software to install.

Yes you could use monitoring software, no I don't recommend it. Let me explain a little before you dismis my post. First and most likely, anything you put on as far as monitoring software, he can figure out away around it, thus making you think its working, but really not. Thats very common and not hard for teenagers to do and once you start blocking sites ie porn, then you have to block security/hacking sites to prevent them from getting around your blocking software. Then you start blocking legit sites that talk about technology, and its a never ending battle of site blocking as many new porn sites popup every day. Honestly what I recommend to people who have similar issues, is to move your computer to a public place in your house, like the living room or what not. Talk with your son, monitor what he does when using the computer. This is time consuming but in the long run the best way to go. Just keep in mind any solution is gonna involve time spent watching/checking logs. Hope my insight to this problem, which is pretty common and something we see often around here helps. Good Luck!

I used this KGB Keylogger on my brother to innocently enough get into his facebook account because he got into mine and changed some things about me. I then found out that he has been smoking marijuana. The program runs in a free mode that isnt hidden, but you can set a password on it and he might not even notice that it is running. And if he does notice that it is running and closes it, the program will tell you that it has been closed.

Although, a 14 year old looking at porn isn't too bad.
You can punish him all you want, but he is still going to do it. He might just go to other computers and do it.

Another helpful thing when talking with him, is explain all the computer related issues usually caused by visiting porn, ie malware and such. Likely he doesn't understand how much your computer can be messed up by visiting that type of site.

When I was going through that phase I looked through the Temporary directories in the internet cach. C:\\windows\temp\tempory internet files\

Do a search in this area for any files added or modified in the last day or so to see what he's been doing. This is what I did to my kid, it allowed some after the fact control, or at least established he'd been breaking the rules.

Nowdays he's 17, and my approach is much simplier, he breaks it, he fixes it. I have to admit I learned a ton of stuff about malware remove thanks (and I use that word advisidly) to him. Now that he has to repair the damage he's caused my world is simplier. :D My life is simplified too.

I'd ground him, and several months later he's at it again. You're in it for the long haul I'm sorry to say.

Note: the above is for XP, for win98 it is slightly different, which is what I had to do.

Take away the internet for his computer, buy a family computer, put it in the living room where everyone is. Check the darn history by pressing Ctrl-H.

Just get him a natural beauties book. He'll get over it, you'll get over it.

I'm about his age so I understand this kind of thing.

Block the sites with some of the software listed above.

And also pplz liking female "parts" is just natural. It's a part of growing up.

You shouldn't ground a kid because he's growing up.

As adults you should know that! Two words: Natural Beauties.

Sorry, we already heard the kids point of view.

In any house there have to be rules.

    These are one of them.

Raise your kids your way (when and if you ever have them), I'll raise mine my way.

Drgnrider seems to lean more toward my way.

History tells you where he's been, but you can't see what he's been looking at unless you go there, which is double jeopardy for malware.

I tried talking with my guy about the dangers, but as everyone knows, the smaller head rules. It's just part of the game between kids and their parents.

I am very sorry but i cant believe what i am reading, next you will be putting web cam in his bedrooms in case he " gets hairy palms".... why are you all telling her / him to put keyloggers on, etc to spy in their 14 year old son!!!

I understand that at 14 you may not want him to go on porn and other things like that. But the kid is finding out a new thing and in this day and age porn is the norm amongst teenagers. Put up with it, i know for a fact you would have done the same, or your mates would have anyway when you were 14.

if i was him I would just be embarrassed that you caught him out. As for all these things they are telling you to use, if your son is smart in any way or any of his friends are, you can get past all of the key loggers passwords and etc.

I have helped all my friends bypass net nannys and all the other crap they are watched with.

I know your intentions amongst your son, but you have to realise that he has to find out one day, and at least when he does start 'you know what'.. he will have a better idea of what to expect.

If my parents started watching me on the internet i would play ape sh*- i have a mutual respect with my parents that as long as i am careful, as in giving away my name, address, post code, bank details, my collage; etc. They trust me.

If by any chance you son comes onto Majorgeeks to ask how to get his privacy back, i will help him.

This is absurd! drgnrider did not come here asking for parenting advice! If you want to let your kids look at porn that is your business. In the mean time if you are so smart then try helping with the request.
I already made one post in this thread and apologize for this post not contributing to a resolution.

I am not allowed to look at porn, but my mum and dad don't spy on me.

Only because it is widely acceptable to watch your teenagers and the news tells you to doesn't make it right.

I'm not questioning there parenting i am just saying how the kid might feel that's all. I can stop them from spying on him.

If it was a child i would tell you every key logger and net nanny under the sun, because there is some dangerous sh*- out there and i had a close shave in a chat room when i was 12, because some guy found out where i lived and everything; luckily he was just showing off and nothing else happend.

But at 14 i did and so do the rest of us expect some trust.

I am genuinely sorry about the whole parenting thing. But it really annoys me when my friends cant use the internet because they have no privacy.

I wont help you with the question in hand, but i will give you every anti spyware, malware, anti virus that i can give you. So your computer will be fine. AVG free and spybot for starters.

    Cya guys

p.s, i agree with Goran.P have a talk with him. Also agree with N80
