All of the above. Splinter Cell is pretty good BTW, for when you get overdosed on sunlight. ;)

USE SUNSCREEEEEEN! (forget about deliberately "tanning" -- no such thing as a "healthy tan" and what a waste of time)

Got a bike? -- go for a ride.
Got legs? -- go for a hike.
Got friends? -- for for a ride or a hike with friends

    Man - it's summer.
    DON'T stay INSIDE

yeah, i think ill be spending an inordinate amount of time outside. other than that, pretty much everything you guys suggested. splinter cell is addictive, and i need to get some sun before school starts

So you have been online since you were 6 years old?

    Or 5?

  15. DanTekGeek

Yeah I've been online since I was 6. We got our first computer back in like 1996 and it had 95 on it. I mean I wasn't doing stuff like I am right now but i was typing things and playing games online.

  18. DanTekGeek

    DanTekGeek Master Sergeant

nope, i was like 5 (could be 6 or 7) and i set up the msn disk, have been online ever since

"an inordinate amount" -- Is that really possible????
I think our problem is we end up spending an inordinate amount of time INSIDE

Yes..go outside...learn to be a young person. I checked just this morning and yes, there really is a real world out there with real people in it and all kinds of really cool stuff. ;)

    Checking out Doom 3.

....Come to think of it. It is a bit of a waste of time. I keep getting bashed and shot by Zombie thingies in the dark that I can't even see.

  22. DanTekGeek

    DanTekGeek Master Sergeant

yeah, i think im going to finish splinter cell first

you checked all right, but look where you ended up,.......right back here with the rest of us.........

o by the way.............have a great day, where ever you all decide to spend it.........2nd cup of coffee, then off to the store and buy birthday present for girl friend, and later we are going to a baseball game. Small town team, that I think is a part of the Oakland A's......but that could be just wishfull hoping..........wobbles

Uh - Dan...wasn't it you who asked for advice awhile back about starting your own PC help business? We gave you ideas about a sign, advertising, etc.?

What about an update on that?

(Sorry, I could be thinking of someone else...and if I am... then YOU give us an update)

I don't see why some of you make such a big deal out of dialup.... its really not that bad... I get half decent page load times unless I'm downloading something at the same time. It's really not as bad as you make it out to be....... I do wish I had dsl though...........

    p.s.
in the bottom bar of mozilla right now: WYSIWYG Editor initialized for Mozilla in 1.312 seconds. and I'm also downloading a huge file. It's not that bad people...

  26. pegg

    pegg MajorGeek

That's all I have too -- I'm with you on both points though ;)

  27. G.T.

    G.T. R.I.P February 4, 2007. You will be missed.

No, it's not that bad for simple page loading (except for something like the "show your desktop" type threads).... until you play with broadband for a while. Streaming news and movies at 700KB which can be watched full screen without looking too horrible. Downloading Windows XP Service Pack 1 instead of ordering it on disk. Large downloads of all kinds. This past week someone posted an old time radio show that I liked in one of the news groups... all eleven years worth. Three nights to download the whole thing, totalling over 5 gigabytes. I couldn't possibly have done that with dial-up.

Once you've gotten used to broadband, it's awfully hard to go back.

  28. mr_flea

    mr_flea First Sergeant

I just used one of the fastest cable lines in minnesota for 3 weeks. it was nice, but I went back to dialup just fine.

Yeah and some people could go from driving a Dodge Viper to a base Honda Civic.

I'm not one of those people.

    I see your point there...

    @ pegg
yeah, i was planning to do that over the summer, but saw that the local computer store is hiring. so im gonna apply there next month when i turn 16, but i still might keep the support idea on the side.
    @flea
its not so much the speed that bothers me, its not having a sharable constant connection that i cant stand.

  32. Phantom

    Phantom Brigadier Britches

Well, F.Y.I. by the time I factor in, no constant reconnection fees, having my phone line freed up etc., DSL isn't mush more expensive and at a far superior service.

Just want e-mail, and to d/l small driver files and patches? - fine. Otherwise there’s only one way to go - broadband. Apart from the fact that it's essential for business purposes.

It's like saying why drive a Porche, when I could ride a Moped and save a few bucks. Well, I could - but who would want to?

    Go outside!! :D

I've been outside for a week now, just come back from Wales (I stuck my hand out the car and said hi to Missy P ;) ) There is such a thing as a healthy tan, which you get when you are out in the open and don't get burnt. However, I got it pretty bad on my back, which was REALLY uncomforatble to sleep with.

My arms and face are brown now, and not pale!! yay!

Unfortunatley, I have a "desk job" now, which means I've got to be inside for a certain ammount of time during the day (office hours).

Goldie Glad to have ya back ,,,Glenn...guess you had a week without DSL LOLOL

  35. goldfish

*I* had not only a week without DSL, but without a computer, TV, telephone (mobies died... no signal and the electicity was so crap you couldnt charge them properly, and the landline broke after a day after it got struck by lightning  ) no bed for a while (was sleeping outside, till we got drenched with the fog) and a very, VERY limited supply of hot water.

Things to do indoors consisted of booze, Jenga, the concise oxford dictionary, a camera loaded with crappy touristy film (eugh), and a journal. Made good use of the journal, like I always do when on holiday :) I've got another one which I did while in Cornwall last :)

god i was with out dsl for 4 days, i almost died. stupid sprint dsl modem fried. hehehe they sent me a new one for free.. :p they offered to hook up 56k and i said hell no. i would rather have no internet than dialup

  39. mr_flea

    mr_flea First Sergeant

I don't see why. Dialup sounds a lot better than no internet to me, unless you didn't have a modem or something...

I was referring to his reference to just "tanning" (as in just being a "blob") but we could argue the merits of what even a "tan" does to your skin...but I don't really want to get into that. Sorry about your burn - yikes

    Glad you had FUN!
