Weighed down and drowing with malware

Hello folks,

I'm hoping somebody can give me some advice. My computer keeps bringing up a number of popups on the taskbar (System Performance Monitor: Warning; Security Alert: malware threats; System Alert: Trojan-spy.win32@mx; Networm-1.Virus@fp)

It also puts two icons on my desktop (Online security guide; live safety center)

I've seen this mentioned in other threads, but I don't understand the steps I need to take.
I also couldn't seem to reply to the existing thread, so I apologize for starting a new one.

Any help would be great.
