ok specs first p4 2.8 ghz 478 pin,1 gig memory asus p4sp-mx mb, g800gt vid card. ok my problem is i bought a aero cool ht 101 cpu cooler 1st time i installed it worked great then comp locked up after 15 mins tried to restart but a no go. thoght maybe i installed wrong and burned up the chip took back apart and tried an old 1.8 ghz chip with stock cooler worked fine. so i went back and tried my newer 2.8 ghz chip again with stock cooler worked great. so figured i had an insecure connection. i put the aerocool cooler back on tried to boot but same problem no bios no nothing just a black screen. so now just to get on here and tell u all my problem i simply set the stock cooler on the cpu, booted up no problem. i dont get it the second i just set the aerocool cooler on the cpu it wont boot any ideas?

Did you put some thermal paste between the cpu and the cooler!!??

If it is possible (happens all the time with socket A) are you sure you're not getting the cooloer on backwards!!??

Well then.....If the stock cooler is compatible and will keep the system cool enough...then why not just use it, and try to take the other one back!!

Not so wierd, just sound like the fan speed sensor is playing up,some mobos refuse to boot if theres no fan connected or the sensor is faulty try this if your temps were ok when you tested it-

First go into bios with the stocker on and disable fan faliure alarm, next install the aero cool and plug the fan into a system fan header"trust me",get your stock fan and plug it into the cpu fan header, this should send a good speed signal to the board to let it know the fan is ok,if it works go straight into bios and monitor your temps if you have installed it correctly your temps should be around 40 "ish".#

not a perminant fix, either take it back or plug a good 3pin system fan into the cpu header and the aerocool into a syst fan header.

well i figured it out thru a few trials,it seems as if i had the cooler attached to tight thru the mounting brackets it wouldnt work i loosened it little by little and now it works. im not sure what that could mean but it works now and does cool about a good 10 degrees cooler.

Ouch. I'd be wondering about a cracked CPU or motherboard.

At 470g before you add the fan, that cooler is a heavy sucker, and does put some strain on the motherboard. Overtightening the mounting screws might worsen the problem. Relaxing the strain might allow a weak contact somewhere to re-establish itself, thus giving the results you've experienced.

Nice piece of troubleshooting on your part, though!
