Weird E-mail

Somewhat recently I have been getting a lot of e-mail that isn't even addressed to an e-mail address close to mine. Some have a resemblance to something somewhat similar to my email address but most do not even come close. I have contacted my ISP and about all they suggest is changing my e-mail address or that I may have a virus or some adware causing the problem. I scan for both adware and virusus often and I keep my definations up to date. If I attempt to send an e-mail and get the address slightly wrong it is returned without fail. The "spam" I am getting has really weird addresses in the "from" portion and I am not able to "bounce" the mail back to the sender. Does anyone have a suggestion as to why this is happening and anything short of changing my address that will help? Thanks.

Welcome to the world of spam :D

I used to get a lot of that with a previous UK-based e-mail address. Personally, I wouldn't attempt to reply to it, even if the sender's e-mail address was valid. All you achieve is confirming to the sender your valid correct e-mail address so they can add you to countless other spam mailing lists.

Open the spam (unfortunately) and click file / properties / details / message source ...

    No No No!!!!

Don't open it just in case it contains nasties. Just right click on the message> Properties>message source.

Gets you to the same place as TimW suggested but without opening it. :)

I'm with you and I'd like to know too. I think a newsletter that I subscribed to might have sold my email address on Opera. I still don't know how one spammer knew I tried to log onto Wells Fargo twice and failed. They sent a fake letter with a Wells Fargo logo asking me to log in because of a security breech.

That's not spam, is something much more sinister. It's a phishing letter, where someone tries to get you to hand over all your sensitive information so they can steal your ID and strip your bank account.

The one I hate is a minor form of ID theft called spoofing. The spammers use my email address on the from line to hide their identity. Makes it a PITA to contact schools and whatnot, because they get your email address blacklisted. I've had my email address for over 15 years, I'm not about to change because of some pinhead. I know it is happening because when they email a dead email address guess who gets the failure to recieve notification.

This method worked for me using Netscape Mail. I assume the previous suggestion was for MS Outlook users, since the link path doesn't exist for Netscape.

    "Return-path: <True.comDatingExperts@wrldpeacepark.com>"
I already got this by meerly clickilng reply, but not replying. I attempted to find wrldpeacepark.com, but apparently it doesn't exist.

These dating site emails are very annoying and following their unsubscribe instructions doesn't work. I get four or sometimes many more of these every day.
