Weird Internet Explorer behavior

So I've been trying to fix this problem for a month now. Basically, IE doesn't work correctly, whenever I click on a link which opens a new window, nothing ever appears in the new window. The window opens fine and the Windows logo in the top right corner just spins and spins, without any content ever appearing in the new window. This is true for clicking on links which open new windows, or if I right click and select "Open link in New Window". If I hit the escape key, then press F5 (refresh) the content appears fine. The problem is that if I ever need a window to interact with the previous window (for example, in Yahoo mail, when I want to insert an address from the address book into the former email compose window) this does not work, presumedly as a result of this bug. It sucks and it is a huge pain in the ass.

Here's what I've done to try and remedy the problem.
I have ran the latest versions of AVG 6.0, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Ad Aware 6.0 (configured to do a deep clean, as per your article). While some of them came up with stuff on a few occasions, no cleansing has ever fixed this problem. I updated to the latest SP2 for Windows XP Home. I read on Microsoft that you CAN NOT uninstall IE 6 for Windows, else I would have done this. I tried to reinstall it over the existing version, but I don't think this worked.

Any help? Should I run Hijack This and post a log?

    Thanks,

There was a thread on this just a little while ago called "links":

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=39182&page=2&pp=20&highlight=windows

It might not all apply -- but if you start here and see if you have your settings correct and do the steps they told laurieB to take, you may have your problem solved.

OR - it could all be some other problem...but I would start with that thread's advice.

Some links just do that because of the HTML tag.
For example: If it would be my site, and i would offer a download, I would make the link open in a new window.
    Why?
Because, i would want the individual to still be able to view my site but also download the app, or whatever at the same time.
Alothough, it should not happen to all links.
    Try the download Peggs offer.
    Good Luck.
