Weird networking/router problem

Ok so something is up with my router (or at least I believe its my router). Everything was working fine until I reformatted my computer (because I changed cases and added some new hardware). Here is the case:

When I plug my computer directly to the internet (w/o the router) everything works fine.

When I connect my router, my sister's computer has no problem connecting to the internet, but I constantly get the 'limited/no connectivity' and internet doesn't work.

When I do get the limited/no connectivity, I went to start>run>cmd and typed in 'ipconfig /all' there is some weird IP that I havn't seen before and there is no DNS server.

I tried just running my computer through the router (w/o my sisters computer plugged in) and still the same problem.

I figured that its not my computer because when I plug directly to the internet, everything is fine. When I go through the router, my sister gets internet but I don't. Is the router rejecting my computer or something? What could be the issue?

I really need internet to work on both as my sister and I are both university students constantly needing internet. Can anyone help?

is the weird ip a 169 number?

you might need to reinstall the drivers for your router. good place to start right there.

before that, try an ipconfig/release and /renew.

If the release and renew doesn't work, can you do an ipconfig /all on your sisters computer to find out if she is using DHCP.

It shoudl tell at least that DHCP is enabled.

If not it could be that your computer was originally set with a static ip config that you will need to re-enter before you get connectivity either that or get dhcp switched on on your router.

Yes it is a weird 169 number. I'll try to reinstall the drivers, I guess I should google them? And I can't even get into the router when im connected to it, like putting in the default gateway, which, from what I know, should allow you to get into the router without internet. Also, I've tried going to Control Panel> Network Connections> TCP/IP properties> and setting the information manually (ip, gateway etc.) but this only works when internet is already working (ie, i can do this on my sisters computer)

DHCP wasn't enabled because I configured the TCP/IP to give her a static ip. I set it to autoconfiguration, and now DHCP is enabled.

PS: the router I am using is the Linksys BEFSX41

well that makes sense then. after you enabled dhcp, try to do an ipconfig again. if you still have the 169 ip, do a /release /renew. if dhcp is enabled and your device is working properly, you should get your private 192 ip address.

Okay I went to the CMD, wrote in ipconfig /release and then when i tried to renew it said that an error occurred saying that it "couldn't contact DHCP server. Request has timed out".

I installed the latest firmware on the router and even reinstalled the networking drivers for my motherboard and still no luck.

are you sure you configured dhcp correctly? i cant really help much on that because i dont use one of the all-in-one home devices. but if you get into your device you might see dhcp settings or something and you have to enable the scope for it.

also what ip are you using to access the web interface for your device?

Im not using my device to talk on here. Im using my sisters computer. Only way I can get internet on mine is to connect it directly, which I stated before. I'll take a look for something 'scope' related on my router. Not sure why I cannot contact the DHCP from mine though, but we'll see.

if your nic card is configured with a different tcp/ip schema than what the router has been configured then they will not talk.. i thnk you mentioned your sister having a static ip.. that would suggect that dhcp on the router isnot turned on... if it is i dont think the static ip would work correctly... though i could be wrong there... now you should be able to get on the routers webpage via your sisters computer and make necessary changes.. which would either be to set her ip address to work on dhcp and configure the router to act as a dhcp gateway or to configure your computers ip address to work with a static ip in the same schema as the routers config... let us know what your routers ip address schema is and someone can work out working static ip addresses for you should you decide to go that route.. or if you want to go dhcp then it shouldnt take more than switching your router seting to use dhcp and setting your sisters computer to obtain address automatically.. as well as obtain dns automatically...

just a thought though.. correct me if im wrong in any of this.. im still learning it all too.. xD

You can use static IPs even if the router is configured as a DHCP server, you should just assign static IPs outside the DHCP range to avoid conflicts.

So let my get this straight... Your sister can connect without problem through the router when her settings in her computer are set to obtain automatically OR when they are set with DHCP?

And you cannot connect either way when connecting to the router?

Both computers connections are wired, correct?

What type of router is it? What model?

Are the computers XP? Home or Pro?
