Weird problem...

Lately, it seems my computer has a habit of shutting down, but not really shutting down. It's also turning off my monitor when it happens. When I say shutting down, but not really shutting down, I mean that it appears to turn off, but the fans are still going and the light that's shows the computer is on, stays lit.

The monitor turns off, and I know it's off because the light that shows that it is on, turns off, and not amber and blink like it does when I shut the computer off and not it.

Temps are normal for this computer and all dust was recently two weeks ago.

I'm not sure what can be causing it. Any ideas?

 

i would run through these steps first
desktop - right click
properties - left click

screen saver tab
select 'power'

Adjust the following if needed...
turn off monitor 'never'
turn off hard disks 'never'
system standby 'never'
select 'apply'

Hibernate tab
uncheck 'Enable hibernation'
select 'apply'
select 'OK'

When I was running Windows ME, if it hybernated, you had to turn the power off and on again to get out of it, so I decided the previous settings were just the safest, I still use them with XP

 

Thanks for the reply, I just double checked those settings and they are all as you said to put them.

Any other ideas?
