    Dear Gentlemen,

I am a newbie, and novice, but I have a problem I was wondering if one could help. Here is a description.

Every now and then a popup, I think from norton Antivirus or Zone alarm, pops up and asks me if I want to connect " -36878687 [find error]" (the number always starts with 3, but the other digits usually change) to the internet. If I click no, then the program seems to stop working, whether it is pop3, IE etc. If I close the program out and open it again, the program then works ok. Once, I clicked yes and it appeared that gobs of information was being transfered out of the computer.

I have downloaded different anti ad programs to find problems and they all seem to find different problems, but none seems to have found this particular problem.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Steve,

It is always a good idea to start with the Cleanup Tutorial HERE:
READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan and Virus Removal

Please note the steps that you are able to complete and the ones that give you problems. Note that you need to be in Safe Mode with System Restore OFF (if you have it - you didn't give OS) and have the Viewing of Hidden Files ENABLED as per the instructions in the link. Make sure to do the Online Scans.

Post back and let us know how you fared.

    Best luck :)

Thanks. Downloaded the programs and found a couple of files. Couldn't run Trends micro free online scan as either my active X is disabled or not installed.

Security check and stinger worked ok.

I will see how things go the next several days and see if the Zonealarm popup activates again. There is no log even indicating that I was asked for a connection.

    I am running Windows 98, I think version 2.

Thanks for helping an idiot on computers.
    Take care.
