Weird sound

for the last few days my pc volume has had a mind of its own
i'll be listening to a song the all of a sudden it will get quieter, then later it'll get louder again

i'm not manually doing anything, and all of the volume settings on Windoze Media Player and the pc's general volume controls are all high.

i cant think of a single reason why this could be happening, other than my speakers being faulty (they're only a year old, plus i havent done anything to them to make this suddenly happen) or the driver on my pc for my sound card being a bit nuts.

mine's a sound blaster live! 24 bit

i have so much stuff i wanna get for my computer (new HDD, good graphics card) so i guess that's another one for the list!
