    Hi,

Yesterday i opened up the case of my computer so i could dust it out a little bit. The only things i removed where my video card and the psu (which i opened up also to clean it inside). I also unplugged everything comeing from the psu and the plugs in the audio -panel on my mainboard so i could tie them together. After i was finished, i mounted the psu and video card back on in the system, plugged everything back in (including those from the audio panel) and booted up the system.
Everything seemed normal beside this particular sound and the fact that only 1 of my 2 speakers worked. On that moment i thaught the sound was probably because i plugged in the audio wrong.

I dont really know how to describe that sound. Its this high pitched, high frequenty, constant noise comeing out of my computer. Not from my speakers, but the system itself. You can compare it like the sound you hear when something really loud just happened (a hit on you ear, explosion, very loud music, ect), or like those little whistles they use in dog-training.

So i opened up my case again, took my mainboard's instruction manual along so i wouldnt plug them wrong again. But after reboot realised that supersonic screechy ly noise was still present. Eventhough my speakers are both working again.

Does anyone know where it could come from? I tried to trace it down but i cant really find out where it exactly comes from. Otherwise my cpu is running allright, no errors, no slow-downs, everest shows nothing unusual and all voltages and temperatures are all normal...

    Hope anybody can help?

    Grtz

Just a thought when you "Tied together" your wiring you didn't purchance route the wires such that the ties or wires are hitting any of the Fans. I had one case where someone had used those zip ties and trimmed the ends off with a cutter, and the end flew off and got lodged in the fan. We could hear that the noise was coming from the fan, but couldn't see the little plastic bit. Took the fan off, and yeppers the little sucker was lodged in behind and just touching the fan blades, and the noise it made was high pitched and loud Hope that helps

    Hi,

My mainboard is a Abit SG-80. I could google up a picture and post the link if you want. But the AudioPanel is on the opposite side of the cpu-fan so that not really possible. The only fan that could possibly hit the wires is the one on the video card in the agp slot. I've checked, just to be sure and the wires are just long enough to fit in the audio.
Thanks for your help, do you maybe have any other suggestion?

I think this is from the fans.check all of them, but I think the GPU fan maybe touching the wall of the heatsink.

I was thinking of that too. Except for the drives, I cant really think of any other hardware that could be the cause of this. But then dropped this idea because i didn't do anything to the fans beside cleaning most of the dust with a dry cloth and some cottonswaps (i didn't have can of pressered air or anything, just wanted to do a quick cleanup). But I did clean up the psu fan by screwing it off the psu's housing.
Could it be hitting the wall because of the screws beeing screwed back on to tight which pulls the fan closer to the wall?
I havent had the time yet to check it out yet, due to work and stuff. It will probably be for tomorow. i'll let you know as soon as its done.

Well, I've checked the PSU even losened up the screws a little bit but that didnt really make a difference. I've unplugged my cpu fan but it was still there also so that can't be the cause. I've tried to locate the source once again but i really cant figure out where it comes from.
I really dont know what to do, or what to check anymore. I'm affraid that if i just let this be, i'll end up with something broke cause of overheating or so.
The only 2 things left i can come up with are the hard drive and the video card fan.
I do have a question about the graphics card! I've noticed earlier when i booted up the system while the case was opened. Now i've noticed the fan on the graphics card wasn't spinning at all. I have my monitor directly connected on the card. The question is, Does a graphics card fan spin all the time (like a cpu fan or so does) or does it only start up when the card's temperature starts to raise, so only when needed to???? (I never give any attention to it before)
I have an ATI Radeon 9550, if thats any help.
I've tried to spin it myself while the system was off and it bearly spinned any. I really had to spin it quiet hard for it to bearly spin a few rounds, thinking of how small that fan is. Could it be that somethings wrong with the fan so that the card cant provide the strength on its own to spin it? Maybe perhaps even causing the sound i've been trying to locate for some time now?

I use a paper towel tube as a poor mans stethoscope. Works great in finding those elusive noises.

That Graphic's Card fan should be able to turn by just blowing on it........think that might be the culprit nootjes, are there removeable Power leads to that fan or are the soldered on? If they are removeable just disconnect the leads and fire-up the computer, and see if the sound has disappeared, you wont hurt the card during that brief time. Hope that Helps

unplugging the video card fan didnt helped either. But, i"ve managed to find out where else the sound is comeing from. As it seems, my harddrive is the cause. I don't really understand what, how or when. When i cleaned out my case (after then that noise started) beside unplugging the ide and power cables cause it was in the way, I havent done anything to the drive. But i'm sure it is the hd afterall, because earlier today i've unplugged this one and installed an other HD from an other system i have and apparently booting up useing that other hd didnt bring any noise at all. I reainstalled current HD and the problem came back... Guess i'll have to replace it then..eventhough everything is still working allright, if it wouldnt be for this sound i wouldnt even be thinking there could be something wrong with my computer it never ran any smoother than this before

Has anyone else ever had this problem before?

Yea I have heard of that occurring from time to time, though usually when the HD makes a noise it crash's very shortly after words.

Glad you found it and posted back though nootjes, strange noises from ones PC can be really annoying.

Make certain that you get the data off of that HD ASAP, you wouldn't want to lose it after all this.
