Weird Windows/MS Office Problem

Yesterday I downloaded Norton 2006 trial and I think this is what started a series of events. After loading the program and I restarted my computer, Norton would freeze the two times I opened it. On try three it wouldn't even come up and all of my exe and doc icons turned to little white sheets of paper. I turned off the computer and went home. This morning after starting the computer up in safe mode I tried to get into the control panel to uninstall the Norton program. Each time I clicked on the control panel a message would come up "windows can not create a short cut here". Went back to regular mode and still got the same message. Now this is a dell dimension 4300s - its runs on Windows XP Home Edition. I went into MS to try and update but with that I would get a message about ActiveX. Told me to right click and install activeX - Not working. Then I get a box coming up stating "trying to install small business xp". I do not have the original disc that came with this system, but it shouldn't be installing small business since I have home edition. Can't get into any office programs and tried to download the registry mechanic but because it is an exe extention it won't open. Any help on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

 

Make sure you don't have a stuck shift or control key. Can make strange click-on things happen.

Boot into safe mode and restore your system to a prior point (before the Norton install). Should not have to uninstall it.
