Weird wireless connection problem

So, a little while back, I had to do the cleaning procedures. I know that people can have internet problems after using Combofix.

I initially didn't think anything of mine because the only thing that seemed to happen was my wireless icon disappeared from my taskbar. I got that back.

What's been happening is that my wireless will work to connect to my browsers (this is happening with both FF and IE) and then it'll just not work. Doing a repair doesn't fix it either. I have to reboot.

Now here's the weird part. I am able to send/receive using Outlook after this happens. So there is a connection (right???).

I have made sure it is not my Firewall.

Any ideas on things I could try?:confused

ugh...I hate networking issues. If there's any other info I can give, let me know.

Just ran the SAS repair, so I guess I'll see if that helps.

My internet if fine for a while and then it just goes, so I won't know until it does or doesn't go out. :(

Just open SAS, click on preferences...then the repairs tab....scroll down to repair broken internet connections....see if that helps.

The only other things I could suggest ( assuming you are not running through a router?) is that "outages" can often be just your ISP having problems...as IM's and emails will still often work. Do speed tests on those occasions if you can.

she said wireless so i'm assuming a router. unless she used a wireless card attached to a server like i did. make sure theres no blocks on port 80 in your router config.
EDIT: when you can't browse the web, try going to http://www.speedguide.net:8080/
and if it works, but other sites don't, copy and paste the result to me.
    thanks!

I'm actually running through two routers. My main wireless router is connected through the one have to use through my ISP since it requires a coax connection. There no prob with my signal though and before when my main one needed a reset, all I had to do was use the ISP provided one.

I've been running this way for a couple of years though with no recent changes in settings.

I'll check it out. But I would think if there was a block on the port I'd get no connection at all.

Edited to add: from what I see, there's no block.

So how long from when you first connect to wireless does it take to drop you? does the wireless connection itself drop or just browser connectivity? Im assuming only browser since you can still use outlook which is weird. When it drops, can you ping your gateway? Ping your public IP address? Ping google.com?

try to restart wzc. in services stop and then restart Wireless Zero.

I timed it this morning. I think it has to do with how heavy my usage is. This morning is was about 50 minutes from the time I was on to when it crapped out.

Yes, it is just browser capability, although I tested my quicken software which I have connected to my bank account and that didn't work either, but that may connect through IE. Outlook definitely send/receives. I sent myself an email and it sent and came through right away with no prob. Weird, right? A while back, I was having issues with Outlook and discovered a fix which involved changing my incoming and outgoing ports so switched to 110 and 587. Wondering if it's a port issue??? :confused

Tell me how to ping my gateway, IP and google.com though for next time it happens. I ran the SAS repair and so far have not had to reboot, so we'll see.

Like I said, I've tried network repair, exiting out of my Firewall, and running CCleaner. It will bring up one web page after I try these and then it's done again. Odd, right???

the port thing was because you're using AOL. but its most likely a port thing. and in command prompt use ping then type in an IP address or server name, such as google.com

LauraR MajorGeeks Super-Duper Administrator Staff Member

    It's not AOL, z. ;)

and not sure where command prompt is. Is that to ping as Steve was saying?

  14. KingSteve

    KingSteve MajorGeek

    ya really weird.
ping those things by going into command prompt same way you did to get the ipconfig.
type ping 192.168.1.1 (thats your gateway)

i dunno know your public IP, but if you can ping your gateway and then ping www.google.com it doesnt matter.
just tryin to see if its dns related. Kinda shooting in the dark on this one.

and yeah, thats what i was saying.
    start - run - cmd

Pinging both of those both came back as sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0

    Same with my public one.

hmmm...still up and running though, so maybe the SAS repair helped. ::fingers crossed::

If it goes down again, I'll ping those.

LauraR MajorGeeks Super-Duper Administrator Staff Member

Well, that didn't work. :( Crapped out on me again.

I did the ping for all three and they all went through. wtf!!

    This makes no sense.

    Anyone have any other ideas?

Updating the driver was one of the first things I did.

I checked out the other links, lmbest, but I don't have the options for the CAM setting (probably something to do with Dell) and the manual diagnostic comes out clean.

    HI Laura

I would have posted same as Digital above and reset the TCPIP stack and info here on that task http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357

Also maybe and it should be the cause but dump the DNS cache, if your using Vista then open an elevated cmd prompt, type CMD into the start search box and right click cmd and choose Run as Administrator, then type ipconfig /flushdns and hit return.

Even if you dont suspect your Firewall, its possible, so uninstall it and cleanup using CCleaner and ist cleaner and registery tools (run the reg one until nothings listed) and then reboot and try the net, then reinstall your firewall.

    What firewall is it BTW?

Ok...thanks Digital and Halo for some new things to try. LOL

So I reset the TCPIP stack using MS's utility.

I was using Comodo and uninstalled it. I didn't reinstall as I'm going to use the Windows FW for awhile and see if things have improved. I was actually thinking maybe it was Comodo but when I exited out of the program, I was still having probs. But we'll see if maybe something was corrupted somehow.

Thanks all. Hopefully, this'll work. :)

    So that didn't work.

Maybe it's my hardware going? who knows.

One weird thing though. I uninstalled Comodo and have Windows Firewall running. At one point it pops up asking me if I really want to block Firefox. I unblocked and it ran fine for a while, but then I had to reboot. It was just sort of in the middle of everything though, like I had set it up to block my browser. :confused

Btw, going back to the other part of Digital's suggestion, I flashed my router with the new firmware a few months ago. Think that still could be something that could be the problem? Even when Outlook is running when this all happens?

    Thanks Digital

Problem with a reformat (which I was actually going to do a month or so ago) is that it's a Dell and instead of a disk they set it up to do a Factory Restore.

Unfortunately, that is no longer functioning for me for some reason (possibly happened when cleaning malware).

I am going to be getting a new laptop when Windows 7 comes out, so I guess I'll just deal with rebooting for the next couple of months and hope it doesn't get worse.

    Thanks for all the help!

Are you doing the factory restore by pressing F11 while it says www.dell.com during the boot?
It's located on a separate partition, so that would have had to of been some pretty bad malware;)

    Yep...that's what I did. ;)

This computer has multiple probs, which is why it;s shortly not going to be in use. I'll live with them.

Requested restore disks, so that will be the route I take.

    Thanks again for everyone's advice!

    Hi

Laura, what pops up and asks about unblocking Fx? is it the Windows FW or Comodo, I just wonder if not all of Comodo is uninstalled and firewalls can be a pain in connection settings, would try running REVO and see if it picks anything up, could be the odd registry entry left (in Windows Security Center, whats listed as the Firewall)

Also to make sure no system files are damaged run from elevated CMD prompt ( right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator) sfc /scannow *downside is will need Windows DVD)

Another thing while I have remembered it is to again from an elevated CMD propt type or paste this to disable the autoturning of network in Vista

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

and then disable TCP/IPv6 from the network properties, enter network and sharing center and click in left menu list Manage Network Connections > right click > Properties your wifi network and then in the list untick Internet Protocol version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click OK

It was Windows FW asking me. I had already uninstalled Comodo. Windows Firewall is showing in my Security Center.

I installed Revo. Comodo isn't showing up at all on the utility. I'm not sure you can do a search for random leftover files though. Or at least I didn't find a way. When I type Comodo in, it doesn't find anything.

I don't have a Windows DVD (requested one from Dell so should be getting one) and I'm not running Vista (XP) so would that last option pertain to my computer? I'll try checking to see if there are damaged system files when I get the disk before doing a reinstall.

    Thanks David:)

    Hi Laura

Auto Tuning is not in XP, but TCP/IPv6 is, its a long shot in disabling it but many have had issues in which disabling it has helped.

Sadly no Revo doesnt scan once an app has been fully removed, just hoped that a remaining part was still there, the long route as IIRC Comodo dont ahve an uninstaller yet is to search through the program files folder and registry for left over components of comodo, but I would wait for your disks to arrive and try a repair or sfc run on it.

It looks like TCP/IPv6 isn't installed for me. It wasn't listed and I had to go to ADD to see it.

After I got hit by the infected site, I installed AVGLinkscanner. I used REVO to uninstall and am going to see if maybe that's the culprit.

(Of course on reboot this time I got a black screen twice before being able to successful boot up) :rolleyes

So after all that AND receiving the Recovery Disks from Dell today (which I couldn't believe!), I think it was the AVG Linkscanner.rolleyes

I thought about the fact that it was the one thing that IE and FF had in common.

I have not had to reboot once today.
