westell 6100 dsl modem/ hawking hwr54g router won't work together

I just got verizon dsl, and the westell modem works fine connected directly to ethernet, but can't get a connection when I introduce the hawking wireless router. I am running Win98 on a Dell 450mhz with 256mb of ram. Both modem and router have DHCP, and have tried with it enabled on modem and disabled on router and vice versa. Same result. Router says it connects with the modem, but not with the internet. I get a connection between the router and hawking hwc54g wireless cardbus in IBM thinkpad with Win98SE, but no internet gateway. I'm a network newbie, so any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks cat5e. My router is configured as the link you gave suggests, but can't get through to internet. I suspect the problem may be in the modem configuration. Hawking says it may be acting as a router. It is set to a "routed bridge" configuration, whatever that is, which is what Verizon says is correct.

 

ive worked on verizon dsl before and ive encountered lots of problems just like yours. what we actually do in that case since the router your using is not purchased with the same company it doesnt have the same settings with the modem. you must first set the westell 6100 into a bridge mode. that is by going to the westell home page. but first unhooked the router. so its just the modem directly connected to your PC. if router is still connected you eventually wont be able to connect to the westell page. try using this IP add 192.168.1.1. if it works go to the configuration settings and u will see there set to bridge mode, PPPoE. once the modem is set you could now configure the router you have. connect the router and start changing the settings. hope this helps you. goodluck. =)
