 Ok first of all thanks for taking the time to read. Ok my problem is.. for some reason Western Digital WD Caviar SE (sata) Series drives keep failing in my system. i was wondering if someone could help me out with this. The first drive i bought and installed was a WD400 40GB... ran fine for 2 months. came home from work one day, and my computer was frozen. had no choice but to do a hard reboot. the bios will see the drive and when i go to load windows.. and WAM! BSOD!!(first time ive ever seen this with xp:eek: ) tried to do a repair on windows with recovery disk consol..no drive detected. but the bios saw it. Took it back and the store checked it.. it was dead. so i decided to exchange it and upgrade at the same time. to a WD800JD 80GB drive same series as last time. ran perfect for a month.. rebooted my system because of a program i installed. same thing. the bios sees the drive.. but the os wont load. tried to do the repair thing again. No drive detected. Tried to run FDisk from dos...nothing. I am curious as to what could be causing this to happen. my current config is setup as follows:

    Asus K8V-MX, w/ AMD Sempron 64 2800+ 1.6 Ghz

(Current Failed)80 GB WD Caviar SE (SATA) Windows
80GB WD HD (IDE) Linux (secondary master)
80GB WD HD (IDE) Webmaster Files (secondary slave)

40GB WD HD (IDE) Downloaded Files (Tekram DEC200 IDE Controller Primary Master)
40GB WD HD (IDE) Movies and Music (Tekram DEC200 IDE Controller Secondary Master)

    DVDRW/CDRW Combo Drive (Primary Master)
    DVDROM/CDRW Combo Drive (Primary Slave)

ATI Radeon 9250 PCI Video Card
    Onboard Audio

There is no raid config on this setup.. each drive is for its own purpose. Could my config be causing the drive failure.. if someone could please help me i would greatly appreciate it. :)

What's the psu make & model or how many watts does it have?

Is the psu on a surge suppressor or ups?

What was it running when it froze? Could be that program.

Replace the ide cable with a new one. Set master/slave jumper caps on all drives.

If bios was updated, pull power cord, press power button on pc, reset cmos, pull battery out for min.

Don't use any experimental file system on linux. It can corrupt windows. ReiserFS, ext2 & ext3 would be the best.

No, your config won't kill a hdd. You can have as many hdds as you can cram into the case with the onboard ide/sata & any pci cards.

The power supply is a brand new. 2 weeks old allied power 550 watt and its on a surge protector, yea it was on the first time and i came home from work and the computer was locked up tight. well its not a IDE cable its a SATA Cable. and I have replaced it. all the other drives work fine.. no problem with the ide drives.. just the one sata drive. I upgraded the bios already too. Windows and Linux are on 2 seperate drives with no bootloader. and linux is using ex3 file system.
