Carpet needs cleaning under there. Looks better without flash, but hands are too shaky for non-flash; Thermaltake Armor JR case has nice blue lit 120 mm intake fan at the bottom that doesn't show well with the flash. AMD box on the left is a new FX-55, and blue thing near that is Thermaltake Blue Orb CPU cooler. Huge thing, very quiet, cools great, and supposed to fit on my motherboard OK. Huge price drop on the FX made it do-able; will go in tomorrow or Saturday depending on how I'm feeling.

Cool...gotta say that I'm really jealous here!! Both the new hardware you got and just the simple fun of doing another build!! But the birthday is in a couple weeks and I'm hoping the wife will turn me loose at the tiger direct store down the road!!:) :)

Let me know how that new FX 55 works for you!! I am going to go from an XP 3000 400fsb up to something dual core. Just depends on the budget!!

I'm not really sold on dual core yet, at least not for what I do. Most apps out there, and particularly most games, don't support it, and those will only use one core. I don't use multiple intense apps at the same time, so wouldn't get all that much benefit from dual core. Gaming is the most intensive thing I do, so the single cores still appeal to me.

But if you can use it, go for it.

That is what the angel and devil are arguing about right now!! I don't need a dual core either...it's just one of those things that it's out there so I want to toy with it!! If you know what I mean, but like I said...It all depends on what kind of allowance the wife will let me have!!

Got it in tonight, before today's chemo makes me all soggy for the weekend. Works great, and the Blue Orb cooler is awesome. Already had an Asus Socket 939 mobo with an AMD64 3500+, which was no slouch, but the release of the AM2 and particularly Intel's new Conroe/Core Duo chips (which smoke the AMDs) caused a large price drop, and I wanted to get the best I could afford before AMD pulls the plug on the 939 format chips in favor of the new AM2s.

Only comparison I can give is my "old" 3500+ with stock heat sink idled at 46C in my case, and it was a 65 Watt cpu. The FX-55 is a 105 watt processor, idles at 40C, and is MUCH quieter than the stock fan on the 3500. Arctic Silver thermal compound takes a couple days to fill all the microscopic crannies in the mating surfaces, and temp should drop a couple more degrees. My case uses 2 120mm "silent" fans, which are extrememly quiet, and the new CPU cooler is as quiet as those. Fairly high-end system (Two nVidia 7600GT OC factory overclocked vid cards in SLI, two SATA drives in RAID-0 array plus a large IDE back-up hard drive, , 2 gig of ram Audigy 2 sound card), in a VERY quiet package. I'm happy. Wasn't that hard to swap. Only downside is my first ram slot is covered by the cooler, but I'm not planning on upgrading ram soon, and the circular air pattern cools the ram and other components near it, and reduces overall motherboard temp a bit. I'm a VERY happy camper.

Yeah...I guess!! Sounds awesome!! Now comes the REAL fun part of stabilizing and/or reinstalling the OS!!

If you get a chance...let me know how the performance of the chip works on your everyday average computing!! I don't do gaming, just e-mails, browsing and fixing others comps!!

Wasn't needed. CPU and cooler was the only thing I changed this time, BIOS identified the new processor properly, and Windows is just fine. The major upgrade including the motherboard, which did requre reinstall, was a few months ago, due to a fried power supply that took out the CPU and motherboard... just before the new goodies came out. LOL. I wanted to wait until the AM2 and Conroe hit the streets before upgrading, but didn't have the luxury of waiting.

System was already fast enough that I'll not notice any speed increase in normal day-to day apps, they're already virtually instant, limited by the time it takes to load from the hard drive. CPU heavy games should benefit, as well as intense things like converting DVD to Divx or visa versa. Email and browsing are already limited by net speeds, not by my comp. I've only got 3 games loaded that will read out FPS (frames per second), and haven't had time to try them yet for noticeable improvements. I do have benchmark scores saved before/after in 3DMark06. The vid card benchmarks improved JUST slightly, which was expected, as those are designed to test just the video cards. The CPU test, running all game date just through the CPU, rose from 859 to 1017. That's not an overall CPU benchmark test, but does show some improvement for game related cpu usage. Wasn't a mandatory upgrade for right now, more a matter of future-proofing to keep this rig useable as long as possible for more intense stuff coming down the road. Games in particular, always get more demanding. ;)

Yeah, I like multiple monitors for coding, makes life much easier. I've got to redecorate the office as soon as the bathroom is finished, I'm going to build in more cable management then.

I know I should do something about the server, but it seems to get forgotton in the attic. Hasn't had a restart in about 4 months. It's too noisy to put anywhere else in the house.

I'd love to turn that on to see how fast the meter spins:)

You coding guys always seem to need alot of screens is there a reason for this:confused: just because you can  is it practical

  41. RexNoctis

I don't know about Goldy and the others, but I tend to run Visual Studio expanded over two screens, 1 page of code, one with all the database connections, item properties on the other. Then have one for the results and one for MSDN and various help files.

I've convinced the wife that the computers don't pull that much power :D Less than her massive hairdryer anyway! The server runs my FTP site, so that stays up and the HTPC stays running to record TV while I'm out. My main PC gets turned off when I'm not using it. I would use it for SETI but it has a temp sensitive fan and gets very noisy when working hard.

So its not just to show off to friends:) I doubt its pulling that much juice, all lcds, couple of boxes,I'll bet my old 17inch crt pulls more than all those screens

Richmond Blue smokes:) I made sure my desks were nice and clean before I took the photo to try and keep the saint like image I try to portray in this forum intact  :)

Well, it is good to show off with as well! Shame the Matrox is too slow to run MS flight sim across 3 screens properly.

I may just tidy up the office sometime, just to prove it can be done

Rex I run visual Studio in the same way. Its much easier having 2 monitors so not having to open and close or keep moving the properties type dialogs.
