I was thinking about giving it a try( coz WoW is getting kinda boring),but wanted to get some feedback before downloading it. I hear its an "acquired" taste.

I found a page that has a free 14 day trial in case anyone wants to try it too.. but the download is like 500 mbs.

is it really good? let me know thanks!

EVE Online is what I would call an open-ended game. There is not a lot of guidance provided. You make of it whatever you want. There are very few limits to what you can do if you want to. Set up a business, infiltrate an enemy corporation, mining and manufacturing, drug running, bounty hunting, etc. The game does have a steep learning curve. If you aren't patient you may not like the game.

All skills require training that occur in real time. That means you keep training even if you are logged out. There are no classes like a typical MMOG. If you want to fight, train the ship piloting skills you want and the weapons you want. Decide you'd rather mine, train mining skills.

One thing I think is important is to find a good corporation. People make this game great.

If you are looking for a lot of action, EVE is not likely for you. While there can be action at times, there is also a lot of travelling around. Good for someone looking for some zen-like qualities in a game. Some people watch movies or read books while playing. If you choose to do things that take time you might want to also do the same.

Combat is pretty simple. You target an enemy and set an orbit distance. then you activate your weapons and they fire automatically. This goes on until you or the enemy is dead.

I just finished training covert-ops skills which allows me to fly around invisible to other players. I can scout out the enemy for my corporation before battles.

All this said, I really enjoy the game. Even if I don't feel like playing, I can still improve my character by logging in just to train. EVE is really one of the very few games that allow you to do almost anything you want. Be a thief and steal stuff. Scam people out of money. Be a pirate. Or do good things. Help someone build a ship. Join a mining operation and provide cover fire for them. Hunt down pilots with bounties on their heads. Or get a bounty on your own, hehe.

MY experience with Eve is, well, frustrating un-noob friendly. I got lost very easy in the game, even when given wp's to find a target and such. I was in and out pretty quickly, I agree that its an "Aquired taste" simply because its a hardcore fan base, and doesnt stretch much beyond that(kind of like SWG fan base). I also hear that failing is very costly in the game, so that right there is just a big no-no[for me]. MMORPGs should be about enjoying yourself and having a good time, not a 9-5 shift, where just as IRL mistakes cost you big time.

That being said, im currently playing WoW and I just got into (yesterday) City Of Villans. Both games have their own pros in cons, since you know WoW; Cov isnt about massing a single character and making him a super tank with the uber top gear, in fact it doesnt have in game items/weapons, you instead have "powers" IE im playing a Master Mind, I summon various mobs to fight for me, I carry debuffs and a gun.

Its challenge comes as you aquire more players, the instance changes, if you have an 8man instance going on, you will see a TON of harder mobs, and more quantity of them so it really becomes intense. Even if you like to solo it out, your able to change the difficulty level of the instance to get a better kick. Character creation is by far the best in the buisness; every detail is tweakable and you can virtually create any type of character, from monsters to robots to midgets and super hulk-types. Also, when you join a guild, your able to build an evil-lair magical or technological, you can put these cool evil stuff in it like a meeting room , control rooms, vaults, defenses etc.. Eventually your able to go out and raid city-of-hero's bases and destroy them.

But hey, free trial is a free trial :D

The sting of death in EVE can be costly yes, but you can also pretty much avoid death. I have yet to die after playing for 6 months or so. There is cloning and ship insurance to reduce the cost of death quite a bit, and once you have ways to make money (ISK) figured out it does not take long to get right back where you were. Regardless, yes they do prefer to have death mean something in EVE so you cannot be too risky if you are worried about it.

It really helps to use the newb channel to ask questions and if you can get a mentor it will help. This is the second time I tried this game. The first time I quit out of frustration because I could not figure out what to do and was afraid to ask questions. This last time I asked questions and got help immediately. Turns out it was not nearly as complicated as I had thought the first time.
