    Hi everyone.

I'm in the market for a new antivirus. I had noton for a while along with AVG free for a backup. Norton came preinstalled so I just used it until the trail ended. It's now gone and I never want to install a symantec product on my computer again.

I'm just looking for opinions on what you use and the pros and cons you find with it. I figured this is a better way to go about it than asking what is the best antivirus as there really isn't an answer to that question.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I use AVG because it's effective, it's very well known, so I can get support if need be, and it's FREE! It is updated frequently, and nothing has gotten past it since I've been using it. It has a resident shield to block in real time, and an email scanner to protect me there. Fabulous, and as I said, it FREE!!

    :)

    my fav few are

    KAV
McAfee VS7 Enterprise ( I have Enterprise 8 comming from work so will try that out )
    Nod32
    avast ( free )

no particular order .. just on how i've interacted with them and how easy they are to update and choose options.

Like Halo says, therre's plenty of threads on this subject (try the search button on this page. Type antivirus into the box, hit the button and start reading and reading and reading and reading and reading AND reading and . . . )
For me personally it's Avast free edition.

    Thanks for your answers guys.

I understand that everybody has their own opinions on what antivirus is the so called best. I just wanted to see what everbody else is using and why. I already did a search and read through many many threads. I just wanted a refresher on what everyone was using.

I'm currently looking at KAV and NOD32. I like AVG but I find it lacking in certain areas, but I really can't complain because it is good software and it's free. Plus it's always good to have a backup just in case.

Thanks again for you answers and help. Please keep your opinions coming.

Just curious, in what ways was AVG lacking?

I used AVG for a while, then tried out Panda and finally Avast!... so far I think my favorite has been Avast. In terms of speed and the fact that you can set it to scan after a reboot, but before Windows loads is convenient, and there's more scanning options from what i've seen. It's only downfall IMO is that it doesn't allow for real time scanning in the free version :(

Maybe a try of Avast free would be work a shot before paying a few $$$$ for KAV or NOD32... I have installed it on a few machines I have built and altho I do use McAfee on my home machines, Avast has worked well on the others... its update seems to be more reliable than AVGs.

I wouls also have a look at its more of an addition to your normal AV, that will scan for specifically Trojans, Dialers and Keyloggers.

It doesn't support my email client. I find it lacks in ability to clean. It's a great scanner, but doesn't clean well. Also a while ago, a trojan got through the so called "resident shield". What's funny is it picked it up when I scanned. And yes I had all the settings correct.

    Halo,
I already have a2 installed. I also want to give ewido, tds3, and a few others a try for a AT. I'm currently using the trail of NOD32 and I am very impressed. There's just a few things about it that I don't know if I like yet. Before I settle with it though, I'm going to try out KAV. I wish I can get my hands on Mcafee enterprise. I've read nothing but good things about it.

Thanks again for all your answers and for entertaining my question.

IMHO NOD32 is by far the best AV you can use.

I've used F-Prot for over ten years, on half a dozen machines in that period, and I've never had a virus infection of any kind. The price is very reasonable (under $30/year), and the people in Iceland who make it and update it are easy to reach and ready to advise. There are updates almost every day, and sometimes several times in a day. It plasters warnings on the screen the instant I download any mail message that has a virus in it, and it's especially good at instantly killing any file that jumps to the Restore Points folder. I use the right-click "Scan this file" function for every downloaded file from the Net before I open or run it. Not one single infection in over a decade, but dozens and dozens of viruses have made it onto my hard drive in that time. They just get blasted by F-Prot before they can do anything at all.

I'm not a missionary for F-Prot. I just like it and trust it and think it's more-than-worth the tiny price I pay for it.
