What are Resources?

System: Duron 700MHz, WIN98, 20GB HD, 128MB RAM, just upgraded to 640MB. Just lately I have been having trouble with the PC if it has been on more than a couple of hours. Often programs won't shut down so I have to use contral alt delete to close them. I then get a message telling me the system is dangerously low in resources and suggesting a program to close. I assumed it meant I was running out of RAM so I today added an extra 512MB memory module. A check on system performance in the control panel confirms that the extra RAM is detected but I got the same low resources warning again. If it does not mean RAM, what resources could it be? I am only using about 12% of the hard disc capacity. Usually when the machine starts playing up I can't access the control panel so I wondered if I should try to go into DOS?

sounds like you have a program that is using all of your RAM. Even though you added more, you only gave it more RAM to chew up. You must try to identify the program(s) that are leaking memory.

Does this happen when the PC is on and you're not doing anything? i.e. you leave it on and go to a movie and come back and it displays the error?

Yes, it seems time related rather than my own activity. I do seem to be having virus problems but when I run AVG it detects a Trogan downloader and claims to have dealt with it but the problems remain. There is a website called spotresults.com which takes over the current window but is not blocked by the MSN pop-up blocker.
