What are the pros and cons of AdBlock Plus?

Discussion in 'Software' started by conceptualclarity, May 6, 2013.

  1. Does it make it for quicker browsing, such as loading of pages?

Does it ever inappropriately impede access to content?

It can hurt sites funding, as some sites rely on those add spots to help pay for bandwidth and other expenses.

Ad block plus is good to have if you don't want to see the annoying ads.

Sorry to say most ads any more are just annoying and most are point less.

I use this combo to block 95% of the ads.

    AdvertBan
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adban/

Element Hiding Helper for Adblock Plus
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/elemhidehelper/

    Adblock Plus
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/?src=ss

Does it make it for quicker browsing, such as loading of pages? Yes Less Junk to load.

Does it ever inappropriately impede access to content? None that i have seen so far.

I all so do this all to.

    Plugin container .exe slows firefox
To disable this option in Firefox Type about:config in the address bar.

then in config search for dom.ipc

Then in this section you will see the value ones that say true make them false.

And then you will have to add these below to make it not pop up.

Make these all Boolean and make them false
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npctrl.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npqtplugin.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.npswf32.dll
    dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.nptest.dll

These extra add on will Disable Plugin-Contaner.exe if done correctly. Plugin-Contaner.exe will slow down the Firefox big time if not make it crash.

Make the ones that are boolean fasle.

Mine doesn't crash and i have mine enabled, have no issues with system speed or response, wouldn't this cause issues for people that actually might want plugins if it really was as crashy and buggy as you say it is?

I use and recommend AdBlock Plus, you can disable it on any site you choose so that site benefits from the ads.

If you want to keep plugin-container.exe to a minimal size but stlll available you can use FlashBlock
I just spent over an hour looking at various websites and plugin-container was not listed in TaskManager.
I then went to YouTube which is a site where I have allowed flash in FlashBlock and it was only then that plugin-container appeared

The plugin does crash firefox its been a issue for a while now and it eats ram.But that is a fix to completely disable it if needed.

It does not crash mine mainly be cause i disable mine right away.

Madmel yes Flashblock does work i would have suggested it.

Instead of blocking things that an average person might need and later down the road forgot they disabled, generally is better troubleshooting to wait until it actually causes an issue before disabling them.

Pro's are no crap mudding up the pages, such as you see on local newspaper sites, or on yahoo.com, even here on majorgeeks.com it blocks the ad header.

Con is, that there are still some sites that you have to build your own rules with, that adblock plus tends to cause issues with. One that was a biggie a year or two back, was the Nike+ and Nike.com sites to not show all flash objects. Most sites are starting to move away from flash and move towards html5, so you are not seeing those issues as much.

I know what the issues Plugin container .exe causes. It has been a issue since Firefox 3.0 and they still keep it in firefox.Plugin container .exe info--->>https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/What%20is%20plugin-container

  10. I believe I only see plugin container.exe when I have Shockwave enabled, which is seldom on my default browser (Pale Moon right now). I have never encountered any problem with killing it from Task Manager.

The extension QuickJava puts on my status bar enable / disable buttons for Shockwave, Java, JavaScript, and Silverlight. I normally have only JavaScript enabled.

Do most of you find AdBlocker Plus does or does not get plugin container.exe going?

  11. AdBlock Plus is working well for me. Thanks for the advice, everybody.
