I have an old computer with a 19GB HD, but only have 40MB free space left. This is limiting my activity due to lack of space. I've deleted/uninstalled every program that I knew was unnecessary, but was unsure about the Microsoft Office entries... My "Add or Remove Programs" feature contains Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Disc 2, Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard, Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 and Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System. Can I delete the 2000 (and maybe the 2003) verions of Office and still have a working Office program? These are taking up hundreds of MGs.

There is also an entry Microsoft Platform SDK (Windows XP SP2) that has a blue question mark next to it (as the icon). Should I do anything with that as well?

I'm not a computer genius by any means, just know enough to be dangerous.... as you can see... any suggestions and/or instructions you can give would be helpful. Thanks!

you should be able to remove the 2000 entries as for the 2003, I'm not sure about that one.

before you uninstall office 2k do you have the office 2003 disk. just incase you remove an important file that both systems share. I don't think the compatability pack is an office suite program so I wouldn't delete 2003 either.

Hi Dangerous, and welcome to MGs!! Have you considered getting rid of MS Office completly and going with this instead http://www.openoffice.org/? I was running MS Office 2000 Pro Edition, but uninstalled all of it and went with OpenOffice, which is easier on the resources and HDD space. If your used to MS Office, you should have no problem getting used to OpenOffice. BTW, OpenOffice is FREE and is compatible with most machines and whatever you could do with MS Office, you can do with OpenOffice. Of course, this is only a suggestion but check out the link I gave you and read about it and see if this is something you may want to consider. Okay, I didn't really answer your question as to what to uninstall, but at least this will be easier on the resources and HDD space!!;)

Thanks for your input! Yes I believe I have the original disk to 2003.... if I can find it ;).

I'm guessing the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System is MS Office related because it has the same icon as office...

As far as the OpenOffice, I will check it out. Thanks! Can you still open word docs with it and can others open OpenOffice files in Word?

Yes OpenOffice is compatible with Word. I use it all the time between home and work and I have OpenOffice at home and Microsoft Office at work. You can even choose to save it with a Msft .doc extension if you wish, rather than the OpenOffice .odt extension, just to be certain.
