I am looking into getting into the computer buisness more as a support guy then anything. right now i am working as a computer technician for a local computer repair shop. what should i do to get further into the computer business and be able to get a decent paying job in it? what certifications are the most important to most computer related companies? i have looked into some compTIA A+ , Net+ certifications are these worth getting, what other certifications might be worth getting. To give you a backround i am just out of high school , i took pretty much every computer class in high school , programming ( visual basic , c , c sharp, c++, html), basic understanding classes (office , Learning windows ), typing ( i know this doesn't matter but you get the point). I have looked at some jobs local and most aren't looking necessarily for degrees but more experience and certifications. let me know what your opinions and thoughts are . thanks in advance.

    Go to college.

Certifications don't mean half as much as they used to.

Even an Associates degree is better than a handful of certifications.

Agreed (dejavu?); without college credentials beyond an associates, you won't get too far up the ladder.

I agree to an extent, but there is still something to be said for certs. I'm doing both. I'm midway through a degree on Computer Networking Technologies, and currently have an A+, Network + and MCP. Currently working on a CCNA.

Seems most of the job postings I'm seeing still list certs as a requirment. Most often its A+, MCP, CCNA.

A degree is definitely better, but the certs can't hurt. I never really set out to get this cert or that cert, I'm just sort of collecting them as I complete each course that covers the competencies.

If you just want to work in a PC repair shop, A+ should be fine. Keep in mind though, that job pays squat. It's a good place to start though, because no matter what certs or degrees you have, your previous work experience is what matters most to employers, trust me.
