i'm buying a dell computer this week.

what would be better (same price):

Inspiron 560 (older model) quad core processor 2.92 Mhz

Inspiron 580 (newer model) i3 series processor 2.50 Mhz

    Any idea?

other specs almost identical, 560 has slightly more hard drive space

    Thanks

Personally I would recommend the 580 as being newer and therefore more future-proofed. Also the i3 is probably going to perform better than the Quad core in a ration of performance per GHz.

Please note this is only my opinion.

    Don't worry, I didn't even notice that.

I would recommend that you wait another day or so for more opinions as I am sure more people will chip in soon.

And mine too. But I would add not just the CPU is closer to the state-of-the-art, but the motherboard is too. And the Clarkdale line (i3, i5, i7) of CPUs have Intel's integrated graphics support that provides excellent on-board graphics performance. Note the Anandtech Clarkdale CPU Review where it says,

Before I offer my opinion I just would like to ask you what you intend using the PC for?

Example: Are you just a web browser or are you looking to run graphical software such as video editing or architectural design or are you looking to run the latest games etc etc.

web browsing, youtube, downloading music, bit of gaming (FIFA).

my 4 year old dell is a bit sluggish in her old age :)

Well since you want to play games on it, I'm assuming you will update your FIFA, and maybe play other games, I would go for the 560.
Providing we are both looking at the same packages, (Dell website) the 580 i3 comes with basic graphics where the 560 quad comes with an intergrated HD5450.
Once again, this is dependent on which package you are looking at, but since you want to play games on it you need to look at what graphics it comes with.
Both will run the other stuff you want to do just fine.
