What could be the problem here?

Could anyone take a look at these specs & tell me if any of them is slowing overall performace?

    Asus M3A: http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=149&l3=592&l4=0&model=1934&modelmenu=1
AMD PHenom II 940 3.0GHz Black Edition: http://products.amd.com/en-us/Deskt...09&f1=&f2=&f3=&f4=&f5=&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=&f10=No
    4GB DDR2 Kingston Hyper X 1066MHz (Dual Channel, Ganged) KHX8500D2/1G:http://www.kingston.com/hyperx/products/khx_ddr2.asp
    ATI (Sapphire) HD 4870 1GB: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?psn=000101&pid=179
    32GB SATA2 Samsung 16MB: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...ves&subtype=spinpointtseries&model_cd=HD321KJ

The reason I ask is becuase I recently upgraded my CPU from an AMD Phenom 9750 X4 2.4GHz which wasn't much better than the previous CPU (AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0GHz), I know they were rated similarly 6.0GHz X2 & 6.12GHz X4 but a PII 940 should be far faster than both :confused

If I have missed anything or you need more detail I can provide more :)

The OS's I am using are XP Home SP3, Windows 7 23BIT & Windows 7 64BIT all in 100GB Partitions. You would think that was it but my frame rate hasn't really changed at all :confused

Wondering why you only went for a Samsung HDD?? Why not a WD Raptor or a SSD??? Much faster. Also I'm not too versed on AMD CPUs, whats this CPU equivalent to in Intel??? The RAM looks good, as far as the Graphics goes ... I'd probably go with an NVidia GTX 295 :p

But just lettin you know, you're almost at the bottleneck of your mobo ... next upgrade you'd best go for the full upgrade and do the mobo, CPU, RAM etc. Also, I still haven't seen any better mobos than these beautiful Gigabyte ones ... I've been using them for ages, never had an issue, I use them as replacement boards in my business, never had any troubles, they are basically great boards. HERES the link to their site, my fav one is THIS one :D. However THIS one is my current one.

I when for a Samsung at the time because 320GB was an ok capacity, it was SATAII and I couldn't find any 32MB cache HDD's that wer not overpriced, also because cost was an issue... it always is :-D

WD Raptors are low capacity/high failure rate so are SSD's excpet they cost even more for a max of 250GB i've seen.

The Phenom II 940 Black Edition was AMD's last best Quad Core AM2+/DDR2 CPU, it's a 45nm 3.0GHz cpu with a 200FSB, X15 Multiplyer. Black Edition means the multiplyer is unlocked :). Seeing as it's DDR2 it doesn't really have an equivalent Intel but I think it was aimed at the i7's at the time LOL of course it is more like a Q9650 or QX9775 due the unlocked multiplyer.

My eye is on this cheap amazing MSI mobo:http://uk.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&prod_no=1332&maincat_no=1#

I can get it for £94.87 :cool

Why go nVidia when I can get value & performace, ATI are on thir way up the 4890 X2 will be a 4GB dual GPU card :-D. Also the 5xxx series of ATI card will kill nVidia's planned 300 series, the red reign will come soon LOL

Lol I dunno about the Red Reign but anyway :p ... I use a 150GB VelociRaptor ... best HDD I've had yet!! Insanely fast ... haven't had an issue with it, it is however, slightly noisy ... during diagnostic spin-up/down it sounds like a CD/ROM reading at 52x lol but its real fast gets a 6 in the WEI ... the only thing I'd say about the HW is your next planned mobo ... it still only supports DDR2 ... if you're a big game player (like me!!) you like to keep a fast, well upgraded machine with room for expansiion :) ... that new mobo doesn't give it to ya ....... its got almost the same bottleneck as your current ... remember DDR3 is the key!!!! :p :-D

    2-Bit-Geek Sergeant

Well my 320GB Samsung drive get a 5.8 in W7 index and it has 3 OS's on it :-D

Both my RAM & CPU get 7.2 & my GPU gets 7.0 :cool

The problem with getting DDR3 is that I have just finished getting 4GB of 1066MHz DDR2 performance RAM & my DDR2 CPU is brand new too. To get DDR3 I would have to get an AM3 CPU a whole new mobo & 4GB of DDR3 RAM which might as well be a new computer :confused

I was just wondering if my computer can be sped up with a new mobo with a better chipset or a HDD with a 32MB cache, little cheap things :-D as it's my birthday at the end of next month & I have no idea how much cash I will get LOL

lol fair enough .... well the HDD that I'm eying off as a data storage drive is the Western Digital Caviar Black. They come in up to 2TB and they have a 32mb cache as well as a heap of other nice features .... other than that ... perhaps invest in a good CPU cooler and OverClock?

    Heres
the link to my system :D

I use the ThermalTake DuOrb :D it looks freakin awesome and it works freakin awesome ... good thing about it is it doesn't just cool the CPU, it cools the RAM and Northbridge too!!

    DOA MG's Loki

You did not mention what you are using the system for.
I am assuming gaming. If your games have a lot of loading then the 64Gb USD$120 Patriot SSD is a good buy. Try putting only your games on there, not the OS. I run a Gateway FX when away from home to play WOW and the SSD with only WOW on it cleared up my lag in the crowded places. Texture loading can kill perfomance.

You might as well forget 32bit OS for the future, XP will be the last one with a small enough RAM use to make under 4Gb RAM viable.

I might have a look at a WD Caviar Black, if thats too expensive I can always get another Samsung 320GB drive & put them in RAID 0, more space & speed win, win :-D

I have had a go at overclocking & I seem to fail every time :confused, I adjust the multiplier from X15 to X18 and I have to reset the BIOS becasue it won't POST, if I adjust the FSB from 200 to 220 I can't POST but at least it restarts and ask's me to change to setting that will work :-D

    I have even try'd AMD Overdrive: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_overdrive.aspx

I use a Zalman CNPS9700 LED the daddy of all CPU coolers, or maybe the grandfather since it's now been replaced with the CNPS9900 :confused

I finally figured out how to mount it laterally to get air str8 from the front fans & out the back fans :)

I looked at the DuOrb too LOL but I used to have a Zalman CNPS9500 and it was awesome 30C Althlon 64 :-D and the CNPS9700 is bigger, like you said bigger is better :-D I have my Phenom II 940 35C :cool AMD's these days are hot.

I have 2 chances to win big over here in the Uk £2.4M July 1st & £24M July 3rd Euro millions, If I win £24M I will buy MG a server that can handle live chat LOL

your components are awesome. i have a asus m3n72-d, nvidia gtx260 core 216, zalman cnps9700 nt (the same as yours only optomised for nvidia), amd phenom 9750 (probably going to take your advice and get a phenom ii 940) antec twelve hundred gaming case, 1.0tb wd caviar black, 320gb wd caviar blue, 8gb corsair xms2 1066mhz gaming ram, sony dru-865s dvd rw, and a Thermaltake Toughpower 850W power supply to make it purr. i do gaming, extreme gaming, photo editing, and graphics design and it runs awesome

by the way the wd caviar black is a good value and you'll be happy with that msi mainboard

I keep thinking maybe the mobo could be the problem for something, but I was always taught that as long as it runs & all the componants are recognised you're good :confused Donno if that apply's nowadays though :-D

I have the GTX 260 core 216's ATI equal (superior :-D), I love the performace compared to all the nVidia cards I have used & seen, I have turned from gamer green to Gamer Red cool

I got the all copper Zalman CNPS9700 LED becuase the NT is Nickel plated copper which looks nice but isn't as efficient as polished copper at transferring heat, also becuase I am now an ATI fanboy LOL

As for the Phenom II 940 I would definately go for the Black Edition as it's a great buy for the price, the max overclock potential on my mobo is FSB 600, Multiplier X20 which is 12.0GHz per core, 48.0GHz overall :eek
It's nice to know that it is that unlcoked but it would never run at 12GHz LOL, you could get between 3.8GHz-4.0GHz without any drama. Mine is running at 3.2GHz atm by simply setting the mulipier to X16 from X15, no extra voltage needed :)

I am thinking of getting either an Antec 900 or a CoolerMaster HAF 922, if I have the money I will be going for the CoolerMaster becuase it has way more fetures but if I am really tight on funds I can get an Antec 300 & still be happy :-D

I may go with a RAID 0 setup as the 320GB HDD I already have has dropped price dramatically since I got in a few years ago :) And as far as that MSI board goes I probably will stick with my old *** M3A for now as it still works & I need a new case :-D
