What could cause this mouse problem?

    Hello, my first post here.

I have a problem with my mouse not functioning at all, the light on it isn't even on. However this problem only occurs when I have an active internet connection, unplug the net and the mouse comes to life. A reformat did nothing to help the problem, and no one else seems to have any idea. Is it possible that a boot sector virus could cause this problem? I didn't zero fill the drive before I reformatted it, but the virus scans come up clean.

    /edit forgot specs

    XP SP2
    3500+
    MX510
regular verizon dsl connection, no routers

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, Libra989.

Bigbazza offered several suggestions to another person who seems to have had a similar problem. They're worth trying, even if that poster neglected to report back with what worked. At the least, they'll help you establish whether the problem is with the mouse or with one of your USB ports.

You'll find the thread at <http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=74193>.

And if you're using a PS/2 mouse, we need to know that. It probably would also help if we knew something about your system and the mouse you're using.

Have you checked for flags in the Windows Device Manager? Are any conflicts reported? Check the network card in particular. Make sure it's not trying to use the same IRQ as the USB controller.

P.S. IMHO, a boot sector virus is not likely to be the cause of the problem, but I suppose it's not impossible. My first guess is that it's a hardware issue of some kind, which means you're in the right forum for now. But stay alert for the possibility that it's a software issue.

Ah, yeah that problem did seem similar.

I'm using a USB mouse but PS/2 mice also do not work. There are no flags in the device manager, and no IRQ problems. Every other USB device I have works in any of my USB ports, but mice won't work in any usb port or by using a USB to PS/2 connector.

The mouse works fine on a different computer.

I read in another thread about a person with the same motherboard as me (ASRock 939DualSata-2) having the same problem with mice as I have, only his wouldn't work regardless of the status of his internet connection. Could this possiby be a motherboard issue?

One begins to wonder. Have you seen these threads?

Might be worth making sure that you have the latest BIOS update for the mobo if you haven't done that already.
