a relative of mine has just given me her pc to look at.... i dont know any specs apart from xp (home or pro) the cd and dvd drives open when the button is pressed. when she switches on it just comes up on the monitor, self test, your monitor is working, check the video cable and pc. and thats that, the hard drive light is on and the power light is on. ive tried a different monitor, hard drive also a different graphics card but it remains the same. any ideas?

Try using a different adapter type. If she has an AGP, use a PCI, or vice versa.

    Could be a MoBo issue

the graphics card she had in was an AGP so i tried a PCI graphic card, but it was the same.

When you tried the PCI was the AGP still plugged in?? Maybe it didn't autodetect the Display adapter, or if it has an on-board video, give that a shot..

Hmm... sounds like you've got your work cut out for you... I feel for you.

ive tried the memory in another pc and its fine, will give the cpu a go later. I think its a problem with either the processor or the mobo, cos the fans over the processor are still spining. how can i find out if the processor is naffed?

When you removed the battery did you have the computer unpluged?

You could remove the cpu and see if it looks burnt or anything, don't know of anything other than that acept to try in another machine.
At this point I would unplug everthing except cpu, hsf, ram, video card and psu to see if you can get it to post or enter bios.

If it has a case speaker try removing the ram and see if it beeps, I have found when a board don't beep it's usualy bad
