What do i need to network??

I have 2 computers one is a compaq (the cheaper 1s) and the other is a homemade 1. both have dial up internet, same service and everything. If you need any more info just post.

 

If you only have two PC's, then you need nothing more than a x-over cat5 cable (assuming both PC's have NIC's).

If you plan to expand, I would get a cheap 4 or 8 port hub for about $30.00, and couple of (straight through) cat5 cables. Set up a workgroup (let me know if you need instructions) and that's it.

Small networks are simple, especially wireless. I can't believe the price people pay Comcast or Verizon to set-up their home networks.

Not that simple depending on the Operating Systems used on each PC, also the fact that you don't have broadband Internet connection but dial-up instead could complicate and put more emphasize on the Operating Systems the PCs are using...but there is a workaround/fix for (almost) anything!

 

Very simple with any Windows OS. The process of creating/joining a workgroup and assigning a static IP is virtually the same, regardless if 98/ME/2K or XP.

As far as sharing the dial-up, you'll need to have your ISP's software (if any) loaded on each PC.

I agree Steve, for you, for me and for people who have decent prior experience, but for someone who is a noob to all this, not that simple without step-by-step instructions and examples. I wasn't opposing to your comments but wanted to clarify the term 'simple' would be parallel to the individual's PC/Networking skills, prior experience and also what they have to work with in their current situation to achieve what they are looking to accomplish.
