What do you think of this?

So I've been thinking about a summer job- my dad came up with this idea: I'd have a little booth at wedding receptions equipped with my laptop, a printer, a large monitor, and about 5 digital cameras. The Cameras would be passed out to the attendees, and they would be free to snap away. I would then swap out the memory cards, and run the good pictures on a slideshow on the monitor. I could then sell framed prints on demand. The customer selects their favorite picks, then returns a few minutes later to pickup their framed photograph.

    What do you think?

It looks promising- my initial investment is only the price of the cameras ($950 for 5 12 megapixel cameras and 15 memory cards off of newegg)

Yeah I have all the rest- 2 laptops, a router, a printer, a 22 in monitor for the slide show, a 17 for ordering

The only problem I can think of is how to get the jobs- I don't know anyone getting married anytime soon, perhaps I should talk to the wedding planner at the local country club. I'll have buisness cards, obviously- but getting the first couple gigs will be the hardest.

I would worry about getting the cameras back, wedding or not, there's always creeps around.:(

The bride and groom would sign a release saying they are responsible for return/replacement of cameras

Gimp......having been in the wedding photo biz for a number or years....most couples will hire a photographer to do the entire wedding.....including the reception ( and the photographer would be highly PO'ed if someone else was horning in).

To do the entire wedding...you need to also have studio lighting......and some aux high powered flashes......:(

Actually, I was thinking the same thing when I read your first post, gimpster. I think it's a valid point. You had mentioned contacting a wedding planner. I think you're best bet is to do that before making an investment in the equipment and seeing what they think. OR, even contact a wedding photog. What you may find is that since you would not actually be competing with them since these would be completely unprofessional, candid shots that the guests would actually be taking, you may do well with the idea. It would be a step up from buying those disposables that everyone buys and ends up getting one good shot per camera from.

It's definitely an interesting idea. :)

I think it's a stellar idea! There's a version of that where cheap point-and-shoots are on tables and guests use them and drop them in a basket at the end of the night. Then, bride and groom develop them. About 70% of the shots are usually terrible. But the few good ones are priceless...
Contact wedding planners and florists, for jobs. Insuring your equipment will become an issue at some point. For now, get a release sig so if anybody walks w/ one of your nice p&s's, they pay. I agree, you could expand beyond weddings. Choose your events carefully though, and stay away from large scale events where someone might steal from you.

There are other opportunities out there......horse shows for one...the riders want specific shots of certain movements.......martial arts tournaments.....little league baseball....

You would also need a good stock of batteries to swap out.

... money in horse shows, definitely. But you'd be doing more actual photography instead of just handing folks the cameras. The wedding gig works because the guests take unique shots that a photog might miss: of themselves and e/ other: those omg shots they would hide when they saw the photog. Not sure who at the horse show would shoot. But that is a pretty posh crowd, as are dog shows. If you just showed up to the wealthier country fairs you'd probably do alright too.
although... cake is very important when choosing a career.... I speak from experience. :D
