I got a call today from a 'Chad Edwards' regarding an internet application sent in for a "Cadillac / Toshiba Giveaway". They knew my mom by name, and gave the email address it was submitted from. Thing is, we haven't accessed this email in at least three years. I don't even think it exists anymore to tell you the truth.

I'm thinking that a long time ago my mom signed up for something and her information was eventually sold and passed on. Now these people, who ever they are, have it and are using it to try and get more information from us are get us hooked up in a scam or something. That or we won a Cadillac from a three year old contest... *very unlikely*

So what should I do? Call them back and try and fish some more information from them without revealing any personal information? Or just blow it off and forget about it? I should mention that this was not the first time we've received a message like this. There was a place that was more local that said we won a contest held recently in the area but non of us remembered filling out any application. Those calls eventually stopped though.

The caller ID showed a Chad Edwards @ 1-773-293-6978 and the toll free call back number he gave was 1-800-813-8202

Should I call them back, eager and willing to give out all my personal information only to let them realize further down the line they have the bank account number and personal information for the man in tights living at the fortress of solitude? :D

Sounds like a scam...we have a Federal investigation bureau down here that can follow up stuff like that...you should have the same...pass the info onto them without contacting those scammers. That would be a nice surprise for them!;)

I'll see if there is someone I can forward the information to. I wanted to have a little fun with these guys but it just isn't worth my time. :cool

Contact the Telephone Preference Service and have your number blocked to spam calls. You can also contact your phone company and have that specific number blocked due to nuisance calls.

AT&T offers a service for free with my plan so I'm going to call them tomorrow. I'll have it set up where the call will only go through if you declare who you are. No private callers, unknown callers, out of area callers, and I can also block specific numbers.

I'm going to report the number to the Do Not Call Registry as well, as I'm on the national one as well as the one for my state. Maybe they can take some kind of action.
