It can also mean scan line interleave, this was the method first used by 3dfx each video card processed each alternate line of video,if the card is sli capable and the card you buy is also ofcourse,

    Hi alarm
As prankz says the SLI in your example 7800GT SLI refers to a means to share the video processing. To use SLI you must start with a mainboard that has 2 PCI-E SLI video slots. Then you insert a PCI-E SLI video card into each slot. Then connect the two video cards with a bridgeboard ( supplied with the mainboard - not the video card). The bridgeboard is a card with a connector at each end which attaches to the exposed auxilliary connect point on the top of each card. nVidia suggests that sharing is accomplished even if the 2 SLI video cards are of different capabilities. (eg. 7800GT and 6800GS.) If you decide to run dual video in SLI mode make sure your CPU and system ram are fast enough. Otherwise. you'll be - as they say - "computer bound", and all that lovely video power will go to waste. :)

can you combine two different sli cards? Like the 7800 gt sli with, for example, the 7900 gt sli?

No. They need to have the same GPU, but can be from different manufacturers.

i.e. a BFG 7800GT and an XFX 7800GT will work. A BFG 7800GT and an XFX 7900GT will not.

Apart from the GPU, you should try to match the graphic cards memory amount (it's not vital, but preferable).

HERE is a pretty good site for SLI.
