One of the government's two key witnesses testified Wednesday morning that he saw Navy SEAL Matthew McCabe deliver a "right punch to the chest" of his detainee, suspected terrorist Ahmed Hashim Abed. McCabe is facing a court martial in Norfolk, Virginia, charged with assault for the alleged incident last September in Iraq.

We have a Navy SEAL, one of the most highly trained and dangerous professions, on trial for punching a guy who murdered 4 contractors, then desecrated, displayed, and burned their bodies.

I think there are a lot of countries where this SEAL would have been given a medal.

Is this the pc to the google power????

    I don't get it.

Folks be very careful with this topic as you know the hot button topics area was removed, so just a heads up as if something is removed and MA said why its not open season 3 or 4 months later to start again.

I know a delicate topic and one which stirs emotions but their are other forums for this and while I may have commented in the past, I will for obvious reasons be giving it a wide birth from now.

    Cheers folks.

I am not one to judge or think differently of people over there and what they do. Anyone could say this and that about a person. But if it was us and we went over there, and we were in those situations (what would we done) Hell many of us could be very great people law binding citizens, yet in a matter of horror and people chasing us we could simply kill someone over there thinking he was a somebody bad. But as americans we are suppose to go by the law and that is something very huge that parts us from other countrys and people we are fighting. We should detain and punish but they want to kill us. SO its a different part of battle. Now we should remember this isnt a killing or things we have been known to have done over there.. this is just an assault. Another thing is I know many people in the war and some have died. And I had closest friend who who was hit by a grenade. And before that he was shot while the group was ambushed. And from all the horrible things they say and go through we shall never totally know the truth of what these americans have done. I am sure there are cases/people dieing that we dont know and they are claim enemys. But we shall not judge people for what we do not know or go through until you step over there and do it ourselves. I only the best and pray for everybody over there. Its like we were soilders movie.. they got family just as much as we do, they got there religion just as we do. But our goverment and countrys are different.

I missed the prior discussion, and do not intend to throw napalm in the ashes. ;) I like the opinion of the OP, and defer to leave that as my only comment in respect to those who may not agree with the OP.

I'm not going into this too much as I think it could go off a bit heavy, but suffice to say I agree with you Brandy, Navy Seals operate outside "Normal" parameters of conduct as do any of the Special Forces, they don't deal with the light stuff, they deal with the stuff deemed too heavy/important for the Standard military or law enforcement, therefor their tactics and rules are very different from the normal run of things because the problems they deal with are very different from the normal problems. They know what they are doing, this IS what they do. And punching a guy in the chest?.... from a Seal?... Ouch, but the Seal has probably suffered worse himself.

It's very easy for people who are not and have never been in life or death situations to second guess, armchair quarterback, or pass judgement on someone who has.

I wasn't there. Didn't see what happened during the capture, but I imagine it wasn't a peaceful process and emotions were running high and hot; Didn't see what the detainee may or may not have said, or may or may not have done to goad a punch out of the Seal.

Was it correct for the trooper to do that? Probably not. Does it bother me? Not in the least. Do I think it warrants a court martial? No way in hell.

I can imagine the prisoner was surprised and amused about all the hullabaloo over the punch, considering his background . . . and I have no doubt at all he is very thankful that he is a prisoner of the United States military, and not someone like HIMSELF.

Much ado about a minor battlefield offense. Restrict the soldier to his barracks for a week, with KP every other day. Case closed.

    Lol - I should have done the same, Fred . . . I just can't shut up sometimes . . .

The Navy seal was found INNOCENT of all charges a short time ago. :)

There is still some sanity left in this crazy world.

Good, a good result, the guy goes through god only knows what kind of horrors for his country and government, they had no right to question him on his methods in this case.

    Yes, thank God!

I was almost sorry I started this, I certainly had no intention of going into a "hot" subject.

I was honestly interested in how the rest of the world was viewing this, youse guys in Canada, Britain and Australia, for example. How your press was treating this, what your political parties were saying, what the people were thinking?

But then, I did end it with an opinion, I guess I should have let that out, Mea Culpa.

I suspect the people outside of this country didn't even hear about this. In the end, an event that was a non-event. And that will remain as it is as the SEAL was exonerated. Good news there, and Fair Winds and Following Seas to All!

Over here in the UK the press are pretty sympathetic to any allied troops found in these situations. TV and radio generally remain impartial, but sometimes, on late night discussion shows, the PC, hand wringing brigade stick their heads out from under their stones and condemn this type of behaviour. It is frustrating to watch these self important little Hitlers get all hot and bothered and I wonder, "what would you have done? Just stood there and be polite to the nice man waving and screaming in your face?" Do me a favour. I don't know the full extent of the circumstances, but if I was confronted by a meat head that had just brutalized and killed innocent people for no other reason than he could, I think I'd like to have a pop at them too.
I'm glad he was justifiably released.

@ Halo. You got owned, gadge ;)

The rest of the world should think that it is a wonderful country that doesn't sweep such things under the carpet but investigates. Compare this with the behaviour of many many other places where police and military are a law unto themselves. I know where I would rather live.

I have very strong views on this as some here have seen but i will refrain acerbic comment. (this is not HBT)

Most countries have special forces units and they serve a purpose (to do the dirty jobs) they work under extream duress but are then vilified when their actions are a little too strong.

I am happy this Seal was exonerated.

I agree with you Bill. We teach our military to kill, then often send them off to be police. Two different things.

And JOTS, cut Halo some slack, pretty sure he speaks British, not English. Have some tolerance for our no English speaking members. :-D:-D

That's actually a very interesting point, Fred, (not the one about Halo).

Although I know some people in the military, Guardsmen called to active duty, in Iraq. They all say that what we see on TV of the war and actual life over there are two VERY different animals. Most of them have made very strong friendships with some of the locals and while the threat of an IED is there, daily life really involved helping the people put their lives and the country back together. :wave:wave

A lot of the TV coverage is not realistic but constructed to cause impact.

The work these special forces do is not publicized until they make a mistake and then they get pilloried for doing their job.

The reason special forces are needed is to do the clandestine wishes of their masters.

It's just like when you see a politician on TV, that is the face for the public not the real mccoy .
