What does this reg key do?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Config\announce flags.

I have a Win2k3 server that's failing to syncronize its time. According to KB816042 (under the Configuring the Windows Time service to use an external time source section), the above value should be set to 5, which it is not.

I'd like to correct this problem, but I am uncertain what ramifications changing this value will have. I'm googling for answers, but I'm coming up short. Does anyone have any ideas?

Change the Dword value to 5 as suggested in the KB article AFTER you've backed up the registry, then at least if you don't like what it does therefater you can put it back again with nothing gained I'd admit but also without any loss too.

 

I haven't read it, but see if THIS explains things.

 

Heh, yes, of course. Its not that I don't know how to fix it if it were to eff up, but the thing is companies want ZERO downtime. Rushing headlong into things has gotten me in quite a bit of trouble.
