I'm working with a dell DImension XPS R350MHz Pentium II with MMX technology and 512 K Cache. Windows 98 is the OS. Suddenly i have a tiny red x where ever an image is supposed to appear on any and all web pages. what happened? even on this message board page everything that should have an image has just the little red x.

Look at your Internet Options/Advance tab and look at the Multimedia section and see if "Show pictures" has been disabled. That's what initially comes to mind. Also in Internet Options look at your Temporary Internet files settings and see how much disk space is allowed for these files.

    My $.02.

thanks for the tip Ken but i went to my Internet Options/advance tab and the multimedia section has a check next to the "Show Pictures". I removed the check and now I get this three color icon of a sqaure a circle and a triangle where the pics should be. when i click on this icon i get the picture but it isn't the way it's supposed to be. help!

Can you give us some more info about your set-up? Do you have a Firewall, Ad-blocker, Parental Control, etc. or anything likely to interfere with items downloaded?

Do you have Norton Personal Firewall (NPF)? Did you upgrade to IE6 SP1 just before this started happening?

If you have NPF, Microsoft writes the following:

To resolve this issue, uninstall and then reinstall the Norton Personal Firewall program. When you reinstall Norton Personal Firewall, the program is reconfigured for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and should now allow the normal display of images.

Also, see this for a possible solution:
