What is a corrupt file and how do you get rid of it?

Hi. I am needing to get rid of a corrupt Firefox file according to the error message I get when I try to download firefox. It says "corrupt file, cannot extract." I personally don't see why it just can't go ahead and download but maybe their is conflict between old and new versions of ff. I really need Firefox, how can I get rid of this file. I manually eliminated all things firefox [the program wouldn't remove from 'add/remove programs on xp; nor would it remove from my 'tune-up program, or from my ccleaner, so that's why i did a manual remove] that I could by using 'search', but evidently something persisted, I think something that sent a message saying "can't read from the file" so can't remove. How the heck do I get rid of this.

It reads like you have a corrupt download there, Sheena - delete it and download a fresh installer.

I wanted to thank you for a successful download of firefox 5. I posted about trying to download it from mozilla several times, and having problems, including a message saying "corrupt file, cannot extract". But you guys got the whole thing done and it is now on my computer. I am having some problems unrelated to the download, which I will post about elsewhere.
