I'm looking for a new router because me asante's power plug keeps falling out and was wondering if yall had a recommendation. I want a fast one(obviously) with a good hardware firewall, the only catch is it must Macintosh compatible, now most are from my understanding that Macs have the same networking protocols as PCs.

I believe Belkin is a good company. I have a 5 usb hub but I'm not very informed about there routers. Check out www.newegg.com and read the reviews on Belkin router's.

I was using a Netgear MR814 v2 for about six months and it suddenly went bad. I made a couple calls to Netgear tech support, and after agreeing with me that the router wasn't working right, they exchanged it for a new one, no questions asked. I had to send back the old one to prove I wasn't scamming them for a free router, but they didn't ask for any receipts, the date when I bought it, or anything.

So with customer service like that I would buy from Netgear again.

I use all Netgear-- at work and home-- with no complaints.

another vote for Netgear... as earlier their customer support is really good.

plus they work will work with Apple so long as your OS is 8.6 or later.

How does Net gear compare to Linksys router/switch.

And what kind of Model or price I should be looking for for a Wired not wireless net gear router. <-- need a 3 port router.

I would try the Belkin it is a decent Router and for the price there is nothing to lose.

    Otherwise.

The main difference between the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers is the Firewall "Filtering" system, and number, range etc. of ports that can be opened through the Hardware Firewall.

If you are a gamer, and or use applications that need ports opening, it is an issue you have to look at.

If you need special ports opening for Server, VPN, etc. You have each targeted Router to make sure that it can keep these ports Open.

If you want in general more elaborate Router with better VPN, and SPI capacities you have to look at the Top Models of SMC, Linksys, and Netgear. Each Brand has a higher level hardware for about $120

Otherwise I would go with the lowest price, and or what fits best the décor

    A little more about Cable/DSL Routers here:Cable/DSL Routers - NAT & Ports.

Belkin routers are decent, I have one myself. Only problem I have with it, is that the router has wireless capabilities but the wireless cards made by Belkin were not compatible with XP. I could only get the wireless cards to work well with a Win98 system. So, if you are interested in wireless networking you might want to turn elsewhere.

I just retired my Linksys 4-port firewall router for an 8-port Netgear prosafe VPN firewall. The Linksys is decent, but I found a few bugs with mine and needed a little more versatility. Both are good and if you are willing to go wired (I prefer being hard-wired) you can get either at a bargain.
