What is an Internet Gateway?

I suddenly have one. I have just one computer, no other users listed.
It will not let me disable it. I also have my local connection thru TWC.
When I check status for the internet gateway the following shows up:

internet gateway- received - 2,575,339
sent - 23,704,319
my computer - received - 64,509
sent - 74,121


I have nothing open, except task manager.
Even though my computer was shutdown for a while, it is claiming it has been running for 1 day, 18 hours, how can this be?
Also, my AVG keeps telling me to shut down because too much is going on in firefox...maybe 3 tabs open. One window.

I am also having trouble keeping the internet up.

Sometimes when nothing is on, in task manager, system is at 119K memory.

I have done the read & run me, as well as AVG (new version), Malwarebytes, super anti spyware, iobit tool kit, rootkitbuster and mg tools. Iobit found a few things, which were taken care of. No malware found.

Help...please? My firewall is and has been on.

 

The internet gateway is the modem/router that your comp is connected to.
The connection is active for as long as you have the same IP address as assigned by the modem/router even if the comp is turned off.
If you were to shut down the comp and shut down the modem/router then reboot both, your statistics would zero out and begin again from that point.
This is normal network activity so no worries.

 

Thank you for your reply. Its a bit strange it was never there before. If that isn't the problem, what could be? Where my internet slows to the point of stopping? Then I reboot and its okay for a while. Overnite a Trojan was found...Cucusoft/Ultimate-converter.

I had to reboot just now, the internet just times out. Any suggestions? Could it be something with the new AVG down load? It's taking up a lot of activity, according to my task manager.

What is the ARP cache? I tried to repair the connection and Windows could not do it because it could not clear the ARP cache.

 

I downloaded some Microsoft fixes and it appears to have fixed the problem! Thanks!
