    Hi,

I've been experiencing a few different symptoms. Sometimes, my computer used to turn on with a keyboard failure at boot, but then would launch windows where keyboard function had resumed. Other times, I would get stuck on this screen

but keyboard function seemed disabled and I couldn't actually select to launch XP. I don't even understand why that screen came up if I have nothing installed besides Media Edition, and how come it doesn't come up consistently if it comes up at all.

Since then, I've switched the USB port that the keyboard connects too and it seems that everything is fine on that end. However, I've started to get complete system freezes every now and then after Windows XP is almost done loading. Even the mouse cannot be moved so it looks like a completely static image.

I recently did a memtest and it froze at 13 minutes, although the red plus sign on top-left was still blinking!

On another computer, when that happened, we found out the ram was bad even though memtest came up with no errors, it just froze eventually. But on that computer I couldn't even start up the computer whereas here, despite the freezes at bootup and memtest, I have been able to play Battlefield 2 without a problem.

What part of my computer is breaking??

Well, the computer has been starting up normally, since I've moved the keyboard to another port. However, today I decided to run a memtest and again it froze, this time at 4 minutes. Other than that, everything seems to be working fine.

So what's up? Because I think that this will only get progressively worse.

    Hi LeoBloom

I would suggest you make sure cards, cables and the memory modules are all seated correctly with good contact.

    Try this:

With the pc shut down turn the power point off but leave it pluged in, rub your hand on the power supplies side (bare steel) to get rid of any static you may carry. Then one by one loosen and reseat firmly, All the cards etc.

It sounds to me like a bad memory pin contact or somthing along those lines.

So, I was testing, and found something quite surprising. I was essentially leaving one memory stick and turning on memtest, then leaving for college. 12 hours later, memtest was still running with about 40 passes.

What I've noticed however is that memtest freezes when I shut the monitor off. Now, it doesn't do this consistently where I can shut the monitor off and it'll stop working. Usually, I need to shut it off for a few minutes to see the effect with the walltime freezing.

Now I've thought about it, and can't understand what the monitor would have to do with it, but the monitor is also a USB hub

So I ran the test by pulling out the usb connection from the monitor to the PC and putting it back in a few times over a minute interval or so. Nothing froze. I tried shutting the monitor on and off, with no usb conn. to the pc. Nothing froze. However, the moment I put the conn back in, and shut the monitor off, the next time I checked in a few mins, my memtest had been frozen at the 12 hour mark that I had shut the monitor off at. This has happened with enough consistency (I tried it a few times) that I can make say it has to the with the monitor and its usb hub, but what??

    g` day LeoBloom

Just thinking about it and it could be a power management problem.
I would try and set the pc to turn off power to the hub through device manager universal serial bus controllers. It`s in contol panel, system, advanced system settings, hardware, device manager. Right at the bottomof device manager is universal serial bus controllers, Expand the list and one by one open the USB root hubs and go to power management and tick (allow the computer to turn off this device to save power).

The devices that have a power management tab, already have that setting checked regarding saving power.

I don't see how what I do in windows XP would affect memtest though?
