Is there a software that shows what's loading while Windows is starting-up..?

Two ways at the very least. You can use Process Explorer (free) or go to Start > Run > msconfig > startup. I prefer using Process Explorer as it's live and has a very small footprint

Advanced WindowsCare v2 Personal has, amongst other useful functions, a Startup Manager. This describes startup programs and also gives advice about their trustworthiness, necessity etc, and let's you disable those you decide you don't want - very useful for less advanced users.

    Thanks..

It seems I'm still stuck with this one.. those two downloads don't work with W98se.. but I'm bets the info will help a few curious ones with newer OS's and real computers...

I was impatiently waiting for the PC to start, listening to all that HD noise, and wondering what it would be like if there was an active line showing the loading action in real time...

Check the (Device Manager?) and make sure all of your drivers are updated as best as you can. Slow start ups on 98se are sometimes caused by improper configs.

Try all other cleaning routes. Defrag and the like.

    Thanks...

I've removed everything I don't want in startup.. and I run scandisk & defrag nearly every second day... I probably overkill with running the cleanup software tools... CM Diskcleaner, Easy Cleaner, and PowerDefrag, every second day.. and as I work with pix editing: Cacheman Memory Restore and CCleaner...
I pulled HP printer out of startup...

Would a large pix file slow startup?..

I want to see what's loading as the PC starts.. to see if there is anything I can shave off of restart in this antique computer.. but I suspect that the PC would need be fully started before a basic real-time reveal software could function...

Any large Bitmap, like wallpaper, is going to slow startup considerably. They serve no real function. Turning off screen-saver will also speed you up a bit.

How are you connected to the internet?

I deleted all the screen savers and wallpapers, except the 336K one... Seems when I delete that one, I've damaged the OS a little...

    Screen saver is off...

I deleted all the pix which I would never want to see on the screen, 30-megs worth...

I'm using WinWall for custom wallpapers...

    DSL Internet through a router...

Does it help, to delete the scripts I don't use?.. or would that mess up some things..?

I asked HP how to strip the "3 in 1" printer drivers from the megs of extras...
It must be a well-guarded secret..?

Is your router wireless, connected through a USB?

They are a nightmare to configure properly on 98.

As for the 3 in 1 printer, if you need all the functions you wont really be able to strip down on the drivers. The programs you use can be changed but if you dont need the scanner and fax services, you should consider maybe just a text only printer.

Couldn't get the new nat wireless router working with the old W98se desktop, nor with the iMac, nor with the new HP Media Center Notebook..???
    Agreed it's a "Nightmare"...

I just loves this HP 3 in 1... I tried, twice, to strip some of the junk off that Huge HP CD install, which messed it up so bad that I had to uninstall, and redo the hour long installs...
Trial and Error is one kind of a learning experience... Plus you get the op to invent new cuss words, and reuse a lot of the old ones...
