First off, forgive me if this is in the wrong forum.

I have a problem when online with my other machine that is running XP Pro.I continually get knocked off line with this message that says from the NT Authority\System, this system has to shut down because of a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) problem. It is worded differently than I stated but what is this RPC thing and how can I correct it.

This machine was one that I had at school which had a bunch of partitions.I tried to run Partition Magic the other day to clean things up and ran into a problem and ended up reinstalling XP Pro.Could this have anything to do with the above? Thanks,NG

this isn't really directed at you NG, but at about half the pc owners in the country that will spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on a computer, hundreds of dollars on the latest games, but refuse to spend 40-50 bucks on antivirus software and a decent personal firewall

    Its worse than that madscott.

Thousands of dollars on a computer and not even bother to download FREE UPDATES.

Once again not really directed at you NG.

Yea, but it should be directed at me cause I certainly know better!!I have McAfee on this machine and I find it to be a major pain in the butt, and I had a Norton disk ready to load but it was only a short term freeware.Just procrastination on my part.I had AVG on another machine that was supplied as freeware from my ISP at the time and I was happy with the service.I happend to read in other post here at MG that AVG was freeware so I took advantage of it.Thanks,NG

Along with good anti-virus and firewall software, both available free (right here :D), do the Windows Updates. The vulnerability that allows the Blaster worm to work was fixed by MS over 6 months ago, and that alone would have stopped Blaster from biting. Both Windows and Office have easy update sites. I've been a long time Norton AV user, and have just started trying out AVG6 after a fresh install. It's about as easy to use (and update) as Norton.
