My friends Compaq Presario V000 laptop was taking a very long time to bootup, and would not boot unto safe mode. The windows bootup sound was "jumpy" too. I did a system restore, and this seems to be the culprit. Is this HP software? I couldn't find anything on google. I know that it's not the sp2 windows update.

You have given too little information to go on.

Please give a full and complete description of

What you did - Did you use the Compaq F12 recovery option

    What happened

What can you access on the pc now

    What is/was the operating system

Did you friend make the recovery disks as recommended by Compaq?

I used the windows xp (home version) system restore. The computer had been running slow. The system idle process did not match up with the cpu usage. The bootup sound was jumpy as if there was not enough cpu. I restored to the second to last restore point, and this distrubtion software seems to be the culprit. I deleted a wildtagent and wildgames folde which looked like spyware, niether spybot nor adware would remove the folders.

If you want all the system info., I will post it later.

Although you didn't answer the question directly I assume you have some form of access following the system restore.

From your further information you have malware. System Restore does not cure malware.

Bug is quite right you will need to head over to the malware forum, but remember you will need to follow their instructions very carefully.

If there is any important data on the pc I would save it somewhere else now while you still have access.

I don't think it's a malware problem. The pc is running fine now.

Software Distribution 2.0 is Windows Update software.

Not really sure why nobody answered that question?

I would have been curious to see if shutting off the BITS service would have stopped the problem before system restore.

I will look for that next time. I plan on re-updating the computer. When I did the system restore it removed the update, but it may have been another installation that caused it.

Since I have done the system restore, I have been unable to update my friends computer (microsoft) b/c it says the files are not registored and must be registored/reinstalled. I'm going to google this problem.

    OK Whicky.

Software Distribution Service 2.0 is what is shown in System Restore when it creates a checkpoint due to an Automatic Updates installation. It's telling you that it is why System Restore ran at that time.

That is what it is meant to do. However it was an automatic update, released in the spring of 2006, which caused mayhem with XP SP2. It does run well on Vista today.

Reported problems have been with DNS, .NET framework, System Restore, Windows firewall.

Does any of this have any relevance to your situation?
Did you see referenc eto S D 2.0 in system restore?

This may indeed by the cause of your problem, but in order to help resolve it please answer my original questions.

Your first and subsequent posts contain several major contradictions (I think I might take that name when I grow up). Please resolve these by explaining exactly the situation you can ge to now.

yes, I saw this software distrubtion 2.0 in system restore. My friends computer was not kept up to date until I started to tune it up. I used the system restore and reverted back to March before this update. Are there any windows logs I could attach?

I usually download every update. I don't use the windows firewall. It is turned off. .Net is not installed.

All I know about DNS is that it has to do with internet surfing. I also get this message when I try to update the pc. Neither option seems to work.

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

doh, I should have restarted the computer. It doesn't say to to this, but it's always a good idea. Now we will see if the update causes any problems.
