What is the best (even if paid) defragmenter for windows 7?

I'm looking for a defragmenter that will give me the best performance after it has defragged all of my files.

Right now I'm looking at Ultimate Defrag version 3 & Diskeeper. Ultimate Defrag seems to be good but is there anything that does the job better than these two? I can allow either one to run all day while I'm at work.

For me, I've been using the Auslogics Disk Defrag. you can download it here from MajorGeeks for free. They have a paid version, but so far, the free download works just fine.

You don't need a defragmenter for W7, it auto does it at 1 AM if you have your rig on 24/7. Unless you do a lot of in/un-stalling of apps I wouldn't bother with a 3rd party defragger, even the one you linked to.rolleyes;)

Yeah I don't leave my rig on 24/7 but I do download my steam games & site backups. I use nearly 300 GB for my steam games alone and getting close to 4gb for my site backups which is growing to almost over 35,000 files. Plus I never was fond of the windows defragmenter and the pdf from disktrix peaked my interest.

Actually, you don't have to have it on 24/7 for that to happen.

By default, it does it every Wednesday at 1am and not every night. Also, if you don't have your rig on at that time, it will perform the operation the next time you start it up. That is, if defragmentation is needed. If will not however show you anything visually that it's defragmenting, rather it does it in the background.

As to the OP, the suggestion I made, it works really fast, and compared to the one in Windows, I can usually get anywhere from 2-10% more files defragmented.

I use Auslogics Disk Defrag from:
    http://majorgeeks.com/Auslogics_Disk_Defrag_d5266.html
    Requires: Win 2000/03/08/XP/Vista/7
    Rating: 4.53 (431 votes).

I've run it for years now, from XP Pro to Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, with no problems. I run it daily as it finds plenty of Files that need de-fragging, even so.

I don't think I've ever seen W7 defragger in action, but then I am rarely on my PC at the scheduled time. And even more so, I always turn off my PC after each session. Too many years in the tropics and cyclone seasons, to risk storms and possible lightning strikes

hmm... I tried auslogics and it tried to install 2 toolbars on installation, that's a big NO in my book. Also it couldn't give me the option of selecting to move a file to inner or outer track, the interface in particular looked a bit like diskeeper/windows except somehow sloppier. And from the pdf it looks as if disktrix knows just a little bit more than auslogics about defragmenting.

I'm still not going to buy ultimate defag just yet though as I'm still looking through the alternatives.

Best free is Puran Defrag. Will even do boot time defrag for files like MFT. Also supports 64bit

3 year old review, samtal, some of us have moved on to Puran now.

It can do a diskcheck too, even when Windows fails to run it.

The best commercial defragger is Diskeeper. Not only does it defrag your data files fast and efficiently, it also defrags system files such as MFT, page file, folders file (during boot time).

I have used it for many years, and I have been very happy with it (including support, when I had some questions and problems initially).

I have used O&O Defrag for years now on XP Vista and 7, it runs in stealth so the PC is always defragged.

You can deselect the toolbar installation option for the program.

Again, I've had no issues with it at all. You can try Defraggler from Piriform which is also nice.

+1 for Diskeeper. Their latest version inludes intelliwrite that prevents a lot of fragmentation reducing the actual defrag job.
