what is the best operating systems

It depends on your computer hardware, what it will support, and what you want to do with it.

 

Yeah.... Novice hit it right on the head. There is no "best" operating system. Besides, there's Linux and all it's flavors which you can't really compare to Windows (IMO) because they are quite different. I have a friend who has an OLD Pentium 133 running Windows 95 and to him, it's the best. It does everything he needs, it does it fairly quickly (needless to say, he's not doing besides word processing, some emails, and lots of Solitaire), and he's happy and has no intentions of using anything else. So he thinks it's the best, for him. I think he's insane. Personally, I like Windows XP Pro. I've been using it for years, I'm comfortable with it, and it does everything I need it to. But thats personal opinion...

 

Ya dlb, XP Pro for me too, probably because I'm used to it and it is easy to use. I also have Vista and all my hardware and cheapo scanner and printer work, I still prefer XP. I'm also trying out Linux more seriously as I bought a 'Dummies ' book to load Ubuntu and folding on my old 1GHZ Celeron. Bear in mind that Linux is different and has a steeper learning curve than XP, at least in my experience.

 

Forr me it's windows xp home edition (it's what i'm running right now on my new custom buitl pc).
On my old hp machine i had windows vista because media center was hard to get elder scrolls oblivion to install on:mad.

 

Yea I agree with the others there is no "best" os. Depends on your computer set up. Depends how well you maintain it. Defrag, and do your scans for virus and or spyware, clean the registry with crap cleaner. Its the same with browsers. No "best" browser. Whatever works best for you is the best.

On a 2 gig machine with a decent video card, computer well maintained. Xp pro just smokes. I use opera with admuncher and cablenut tweak and my browsing is super fast.

 

There are a lot of operating systems and no one is perfect. Most of computer users make use of Windows OS but there are various Linux distribs as well. Or you are looking for among Windows OS family?
