LOL Opinions are like bellybuttons....but mine are based on the MG recommendations with slight tweeks

    In decreasing order of importance:

Firewall FIRST: Comodo Free - this keeps out SO MUCH MORE junk than Windows product and then AV doesn't then have to deal with it (download here at MG = "MG" below)

Microsoft Security Essentials (free) supposedly works better than some paid products

    MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (free / MG)

SpyBot (free / MG) (with Tea Timer turned off)

    Super-AntiSpyware (free / MG)

    SpywareBlaster (free / MG)

    RogueKiller (free)

    TDSSKiller (free)

Ditto for Comodo Free Firewall. It's still pretty confusing setting up custom rules, like others, but it seemed to work the best of all the free ones I tried.

Same for Microsoft Security Essentials. Fastest bootup time I've ever had. Scanning time is fast too.

    I use Avast free
    Malware bytes
    SuperAntiSpywareHunter
for active protection I use Threatfire Free. (In addition to the Avast live scanning)
No point in paying money when there are so many nice free programs out there that do at LEAST as good, if not a better job .

Tips: Stay off the porn, stay off the torrents, and generally you will avoid MOST problems .

Pffff, my whole reason for using security programs.:-D:***

Just kidding. I like AVG's add on with Google. You type in the site and it has a little green check mark to tell you if it's a good site or not. I will say that links within a website give me more trouble than directly clicking on a site from google. It's like google refuses to show a result if it's too bad.

I am currently using Virgin Media Security for my firewall and Anti virus which is really good if i do say so myself.

It also has a spyware remover with it and parental controls. But you got to be a virgin media customer Large package or higher to get it free any lower there is a charge of £9.99 per month.

But if you ask me it's worth every penny.

I think the most important point here is that the best security solution is a Multi-Layed approach.

Generally, there is not one single program that will provide the same level of effectiveness
as a well structured multi-layered set of security applications.

The first line of defense is your firewall, either a hardware firewall within a router or a software firewall.
Comodo Personal Firewall is top rated but some people find it a bit complicated.

My personal choice is PC Tools Firewall Plus which works well with Windows XP Home SP3 and is an MG Pick.

    #2
Second line of defense is a good antivirus program.
The two best rated free choices are Avira AntiVir Personal and Avast! Free Edition.
I am using Avast! 6 which works well with the PC Tools firewall.

As mentioned on the Excellent Major Geeks document How to Protect yourself from malware!,
a real time blocking tool is also recommended.

Malwarebytes Antimalware provides real time protection if you Pay a one time registration fee,
otherwise as a free tool, it can be used as an On Demand scanner only.

    SuperAntiSpyware is another good choice.

I have been using Malwarebytes AntiMalware PRO for about a year.

Two other Additional tools that are recommended by the MG malware team are
Spybot Search & Destroy and SpywareBlaster.
I also use Both of these.

You can install the free Secunia Personal Software Inspector to monitor all of your installed software
that may pose a security risk and which need to be patched.
There is also an OnLine scanner at Secunia online software inspector.

Keep your Web browser up to date, since later versions include security patches.
Some my argue with my opinion, but I think Opera is more secure than the other major browsers.
It has fewer security risks discovered over time and when a risk is found, a patch is made available
more quickly than some other browsers. There are other reasons as well.

Make sure you keep your Java installation up to date.
You can use this link to verify:
    Verify Java Version

If you have Adobe PDF Reader installed, that also needs to be monitored.

Some Browsers have a Web Of Trust extension (Opera, Firefox, Pale Moon) that works with Google
and some other Search engines to indicate which links/sites are considered safe.

    #9
Download only from trusted sites like Major Geeks or directly from the verified publisher's web site
and stay away from typical "gotchas" like malware ridden screen savers and such.

    As already mentioned, Surf Defensively.

If you keep these things updated and follow the MG guidelines, that's as safe as you can be, practically speaking.

One thing I didn't see mentioned here yet, it's YOU who is the best protector of all! Sure programs help the cause but it is ultimately your surfing habits and how you deal with potential threats that counts. I've been surfing for 9 years +, never had to go to the good doctors here once yet.;)

    Hi Augie.

Actually, it was mentioned, although not as emphatically as you just did. ;)

I think Major Attitude has said that he doesn't even use an antivirus program.
He keeps the machine clean by being careful.

I don't recommend that for the rest of us, but MA knows what he's doing and where he's going. :major

Yup, he did say that though quite a few years ago. I wonder what his take on that is these days? I'm just curious.;)

BTW, that's what I get for skimming posts.:-D

No one has ever seen a spambot post before?

Generic question posted in a forum > google the user name > results show that warrenkirby328 has opened 150 generic question topics in 150 forums in a few days, and has not replied to any of them.

Btw, there is no such thing as the "best security program".

    Ban your bots! ;)

I don't GOOGLE forum usernames. If I did that, I'd have little time for anything else. The generic bot which did not reply created a thread with 14 posts and over 300 views-as of right now-, on an important topic we should all be concerned about. Bot or not, this thread is still helpful to some people.
