    Hi,

    I just got a brand new Dell system with P4 D 3.00 GHz, 250 GB HDD & 2 GB DDR2 RAM .

I prefer to have as many partitions as possible to sort my data.

But I do not want to compromise the speed & performance at the expense of too many partitions.

What is the best way to partition & what is the maximum no of partitions should I have before I start compromising the performance?

    Thanks
    Mike

    Some ideas for you.
    ---------------------------------------
Do not partition them equally as some partitions will be too big. Some may eventually be too small.

for ideas I have implemented on my 30gig Hard drive in my laptop.

Your sizes will be different, of course, because your hard drive is much bigger.
Use similar proportion percentages on your big drive. Works for me. Especially the KEEPER and TESTING Folders, on different partitions. You then only keep stuff you actually USE. Every time you go to TESTING, it shows you the programs your downloaded to test, and you may or may not wish to "KEEPER" them. Hope this stirs some ideas for you. Bazza >>>

    Hi Mike2op
For backup purposes I've partitioned my first segment at the 4.7 Gig boundary. This allows for a very fast and full backup to a single DVD-RW using Norton Ghost 9.0. The rest is up to you, but with a large 250 Gig drive, I'd be tempted to leave 50 to 80 Gigs uncommitted, in case I wanted to try various Linux distributions. :)

    Hi prometheos,

I am now thinking seriously about leaving an extra partition for the up coming new OS Vista from Microsoft.

So I am starting a new thread in the hopes of getting some fresh ideas as to how to go about it.

    Thanks
