Servers can be just a normal x86 desktop PC. All a computer needs to be a server is software on it that serves information, got nothing to do with the hardware it runs on.

e.g. The world's smallest webserver - thats not even a computer, but it can serve web-pages.

Practically, however, servers should be fairly high spec... or at least meet a few requirements. You should have matched ECC ram, preferabley SATA (for good I/O speeds) a decent NIC that can handle more data-throughput than the average desktop, and a processor thats good for multithreading and scalable (you can add more of them if you want). Xeon's are used quite popularly in servers because of their scalability (you can run up to 4 on one board, IIRC) and the fact they support ECC and a lot of other stuff to ensure reliability.

Anyways... back to your question. Yes, you could quite comfortably use that machine as a server. In fact, its higher spec than my home web server, which performs well (I can get over 500 hits a day without it falling over). I also stream music off it (I am right now).

Connect it to a network just like any other PC, install the software you need on it (Windows XP/2003 server already has a lot of the software installed)

They are going to run red hat on it and I was thinking of useing a 3500+ 64 bit and nforce 3 board gonna use 4 sata 80 gig maxtor hd's.Do ya think it will be fine. They was all amd stuff for some reason.Thanks.

They don't want intel from the problems they have had in the past.I'm not gonna get into it now.
