What is VPN?

A VPN is a network connection that you can use to access your computer from anywhere, right?
If not, what would you call it? And how do you set it up? (aside from using things like LogMeIn)?

A VPN is a secure tunnel to your network. Virtual Private Network (VPN) mainly used is business for traveling employees so they can connect to the company network and access its resources. It would be like sitting in your office cabled to the network, shared drives, etc. VPN is not remote control.
You can use a secure remote and access your computer and use its resources with programs like VNC (various free versions), PC Anywhere or Remotely Anywhere (which allows access through a standard web browser, no special clients to install).

In addendum to foogoo's reply. XP pro has built in remote desktop. So, I can use VPN, then use Vista's remote desktop, to remote into my work computer (XP) from home.

 

I understand that. So if I wanted to access my server from an outside location (off the network) it would be by accessing a VPN, correct? (I swear, I'll buy my Network+ book eventually!)
