What kind of computer is best for making videos

Just bought the super-dooper deluxe computer to try and make videos.
What a joke. This thing has 2.5 GHz cpu dual quad core whatever... and 8 GB of RAM, yet still locks up on a 1 1/2 minute long wmv clip in windows movie maker.

I swear my old xp machine did just as well if not better.

    So the question is...
What kind of computer and software do I need to get so that I can make videos without pulling my hair out with this constant freezing up?

Keep in mind I am pretty much a noobie, but any advice would be helpful.

    Thanks.

Hi noob, welcome to majorgeeks :)

Im not much help on the what is what in the movie editing world....

BUT... your PC is without a doubt, more than capable of doing these tasks.

Just hang tight and someone will be in here to point you in the right direction :)

In the mean-time maybe running some basic maintenance would be helpfull, as it may rule out some possible issues, and make i esier for people to help you.

What do you mean it locks up?

Vista runs a lot of background tasks via Task Scheduler, most are supposed to run when the PC is idle, this is often flawed.

Any antivirus and anti-malware apps could be scanning and slowing your data as you work (including Windows Defender).

Bad drivers can also cause significant problems.

I have turned off a lot of the garbage, like wmp network file sharing, search indexing.
Did that in services I believe by changing properties of them to disabled or manual.
A couple other ones I just unchecked them from starting up in ms config I think it was.

Don't have any scanners running in BG etc.
have checked for video card drivers updates and monitor driver updates... WMM is set to download codecs automatically etc. anything I could think of that could be related

Basically in this 1 1/2 minute long wmv clip, if I even pause it, it just locks up.
Doing anything makes it lock up.
The screen in the preview is either black or stays static at the place I paused or tried to split it...

If I close wmm down and try again, it may or may not play smoothly in the preview, but it freezes each and every time I try to do anything.
(pause, add title, effects whatever... )

In a word, it doesn't work.

For the amount I gave for this turd, it should be doing my laundry and making me sandwiches.

All the other video programs I have seen or heard of are all hundreds of $$$.

Is there any one that someone can recommend?

Or think I should just send this piece of crap back for a refund or what?

Could you post your full system specs please?

Are you using the 'classic' Movie Maker that came with Vista or the new Live version?

Sounds like a video driver issue since your system is too powerful to crash from editing in WMM, but a full list of specs would help. It is recommended you close all other programs when editing video since it can be heavy on resources.

Are you using a single or dual monitor setup? Also, Have you updated to the latest drivers for your video card?

    Vista home premium
    Service Pack 1
    64 bit operating system

    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz
    8.00GB RAM

    Nvidia GE Force 9600 GS

Windows Movie Maker (regular wmm, not that "Live" thing)
    Version 6.0.6000.16386

Not sure if you need more specs or what they could be

Yes, I do have a second monitor hooked up.

WMM is still doing the same thing.

Can't handle the smallest clip. Crashes/freezes with any attempted edits whatsoever. Locks up at 99% rendering trying to produce an imported movie file (unedited) too

I have checked through device manager for driver updates for video card drivers etc. Have wmm set to automatically DL codecs.
Also have windows updates set and am up-to-date on them.

May as well say that windows media center crashes when it gets to the "adjust your monitor" portion.
The built-in tuner does not bring in digital cable even though I have that service.

In cyberlink dvd suite, the live TV pic stays at 4-3 aspect ratio regardless of what channel you are on/format you are watching.
    Doesn't record the audio properly.

Not sure if any of that could be related, but it strikes me odd everything that can be screwed up is.

In short, just about anything video related (the reason I bought this particular model supposedly able to handle the "high demand blah blah....) I have tried so far is pure non-working crap.
    Not happy camper.

(edit to add, I do not have other or extra programs running while trying to use WMM. No browsers etc. Only whatever normally runs in the background-the basics - whatever. Maybe a folder or two open at most.)

IT shouldn't be locking up like that even with WMV

I wounder consider returning it or getting a replacement. You could have got a bad part
