My sister just acquired a generic PC that has Win98, Pentium II and a 10gb hard drive with only 56 mb RAM. What more information do I need in order to
upgrade her memory? It is obviously a used system and has no manual to speak of. Plus, what store (not online) would give me the best price for memory. Needs to get up and running right away.

    Thanks,

    Kim

    Hi Kim

Does the PC bootup to WIn98?

If so you can use either of these methods,

    1. Install Everest and once installed and run, click Motherboard > SPD and the lower infomation box will tell you Type and Speed of memory to get.

    2. US this free online scanner to check your memory http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ , you dont need to buy memory from them but print the info out to use at your favoured retailer

If the PC wont boot then best to open the case up and look for a Make Model number for the Motherboard and also look on the memory for some info as to type and speed.

Figure out what kind it is like the previous post suggests. A machine that old probably has PC100 SRAM. Newegg.com has really good prices. You can pick up 64MB sticks for pretty cheap on eBay. I got some 64MB sticks for my servers for $5 a stick.
